I'm with the Large one on this. Best soundtracks means an inspirational film score not just a load of old songs cobbled together as a backdrop to a film.

Some of John Williams work stands up to close scrutiny to the supposed greats such as Beethoven , Bach and Mozart imho.

The score to ET is a glorious and beautiful work which is a stand alone classical masterpiece in its own right.

.

In that case I'll go for 2001 - A Space Odyssey

The Blue Danube and Also Sprach Zarathustra particularly, are perfect in the scenes they are played.

I was amazed to reach page three of this thread without anyone mentioning Morricone, and was tailoring my response with a suitable sense of outrage.
Now The Large One has taken a bit of bite out of my incredulity.
But he was the proper deal when it came to soundtracking a movie. Not just throwing together a compilation of appropriate-for-the-moment tunes (though I think that approach can have its merits, especially in the Tarantino league.)
But Morricone really did work alongside Sergio Leone when scoring the "Dollar" trilogy - each character, and the flashbacks, had their own themes, played on a weird and wonderful variety of instruments. And all of them lovely to listen to in their own right.
For "Once Upon A Time In The West", Morricone scored the film solely according to the script. When they actually filmed it, Leone got the actors to adjust their body movement to the music already provided.
"Once Upon A Time In America", I'm not so overwhelmed by. Both the music and the film.
But have been motivated to haul out my "20 Greatest Western Themes" CD - the Morricone magic all there, plus slightly-more-
kitsch favourites such as "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "True Grit", "Bonanza" and "The Hanging Tree".

Bravo.

(Also love - naturally - all The Beatles film soundtracks, but nominating those feels like cheating.)

I know everybody bought it at the time but I'm surprised no-one has mentioned The Lost Boys yet.
Not the best ever, but worthy of a mention.

Jackie Brown gets my vote too!
