Read that in the summer - a very interesting read in terms of following the story around, and a pretty good plot, although tails off towards the end and the climax is a bit silly.

Good summation of that book. Made good only because you knew where they were, but the end was poor

I agree with many of the suggestions, Lord of the Rings and The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy being outstanding.

So here are a couple more for you.

Lord of the Flies
Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?

Not a book as such - but the greatest work of literature in the English language is John Milton's 'Paradise Lost'.

Best novels written in English are Tristram Shandy (Sterne), Confessions of a Justified Sinner (Hogg), and Caleb Williams (Godwin). Best novels available in translation are One Moonlit Night (Pritchard), The Leopard (Lampedusa), Blindness (Saramago) and Independent People (Laxness).

What is the best book you have ever read?

My favourites include:

Awaydays

Awaydays? The fictional hoolie book concerning Tranmere fans or am I thinking of something different?

For me:

The miracle of Castel di Sangro

The restraint of beasts

I am not really a literature facist, I just tend to like books that are a rattling good read and keep me entertained.

The Harry Potter books fall into that category. I have also just got into Terry Goodkind, Sword of Truth books and some of them are very good. Hitchhikers Guide books/ Terry Pratchett/ Michael Crighton/Agatha Christie/Linda La Plant/ and the guyt who wrote the Morse books. If you get a minute, read the Ian Flemming Bond books. They are very different from the films and probably better

The "best " book I have ever read is The Crucible by Arthur Miller.

On a train...
I don't really read too much, as it just tends to send me to sleep.

But I did enjoy the first Harry Potter, and the Adrian Mole Books when I was a little younger.

Build a Bonfire was also very good.

The Famous Five by Enid Blyton
I don't know about 'best books ever' but I enjoyed these.

But which Famous Five book is your favourite??

Five Go to Mystery Moor?

Five On A Secret Island?

Five Get A Playstation 2?

Five In The Council House In Croydon?
(that's the one where 12 year old Anne gets pregnant by cousin Dick, 15, George finally comes out as a lesbian and Julian receives an ASBO for poisoning Timmy the dog with a pork chop covered in Vauxhall Nova spray paint. Meanwhile, back at Kirrin Cottage, long suffering Aunt Fanny is prescribed Prozac following Uncle Quentin- the brilliant scientist- leaving to shack up with Roger, another boffin he met while searching for WMD in Iraq).

PS Always liked Fatherland by Robert Harris, a kind of scary version of life following Hitler's victory in the Second World War.

Read most of that Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night-time recently, and that struck me as very well written.

Quite liked Pompeii as well, as it happens.

His books are always brilliantly researched.

5 Go to Ninian Park (due soon)

Is that the one where Dick and George-the-tomboy are hospitalised by knuckle-dragging tattooed cavemen (later found to be Sam Hammam's personal bodyguards), while Anne gets spat on in the ground and Julian's car has its windows broken while parked in Grangetown?

Also due soon is 5 Go To Selhurst Park, where the children uncover an exciting giant mystery as they seek to discover how a team of monkeys disguised in red and blue outfits can survive in the Premiership despite having almost no ability whatsoever and relying entirely on the secret powers of one monkey up front. Later, Timmy the Dog sniffs out an ugly man who seems to hold the key to the plot, and the Five face a race against time to alert the world to his crafty plan before the unthinkable happens and three other teams fill the relegation slots.
