When i was a teenager i loved Herman Hesse. I think i considered myself "spiritual".
I laugh now, but his books are still well-written.
It would be interesting to look at books one read as a teenager and see how they stack up when you re-read them as an adult.
I too like Hesse as an adolescent but find them trite now. I loved Mervyn Peake when I was 17 but find him laughable now.
On the other hand, Kafka was an early favourite and I still find him an endlessly interesting writer.
