Best Albion Manager of last 30 years

I know this has been done before, but in the light of our start to the season how do people now feel. They all achieved things for the club in their own way

What a question. Almost Impossible to compare given the differing era's they have been competing in.

I would personally say Peter Taylor (75-77). It was he who took the club onto the next level prior to Mullery exploits. My Favourite though was Chris Catlin - The worst manegerial decision ever made by an Albion board to sack him.

I think they all made contributions for the club, even the likes of Big bad Barry Lloyd, who achieved a promotion and the club's last appearance at Wembley during his reign, as well as signing the likes of Gotsmanov, Nelson, Nogan etc.

Mullery and Melia took the club to the two highest points in our history so I guess they must be the top two. Gritt worked an absolute miracle with no money and no support from the board.
Mickey did a fantastic job. Please don't ask me to choose just one!

I wasn't around in the 70's so it makes it easy for me - Adams! When I started watching us we'd had Lloyd in charge for who knows how many years, and those who followed either weren't up to it or had no chance of success due to the problems behind the scenes. Horton flew the nest before we saw what he was capable of, but I'm glad he did, becuase Adams was a class act from start to finish. he mades his mistakes, like everyone does (Dirk Who!?), but as Berkshire says, he took us from Third Division nothingness to the cusp of Division One.

Saying that, I think we've got one of the best managers in the Nationwide in Coppel and I can't wait to see how things go this season once we get going.

I have to also mention Gritt - probably not the best manager we've had, but the one who worked an absolute miracle. No Gritt, no Albion. Simple as.

To take over one of the worst Albion teams in history, and build a team which won back to back promotions, it has to be Micky Adams.

I was gutted when Chris Cattlin was sacked. The man had so much passion for the Albion.

I also wonder what would have happened had Mike Bailey not been sacked. The football was boring under him, but I doubt that we would have been relegated had he stayed in charge. Mind you, we probably wouldn't have got to the Cup Final either.

Has to be Mickey Adams, though I reckon Chris Cattlin would have been a folk hero by now if he had been given the chance.

Lots of others were good, but only Peter Taylor 1 would really push Adams, as he did a similar job of turning the whole club round. Adams gets the vote for doing it with no money, though.

Hopefully Coppell will become our greatest manager of all time within the next 5 years.

Chris Cattlin. No argument really. I am glad that Liam Brady was included in the list though.

Although Chris Cattlin was clearly the best in my time, he was not the best at every aspect of the job. Just better all round. Chris Cattlin wasn't very lucky!

Should have had Brian Clough on the list as well? Even in the few hours he was here, he made an impact.

Although the 70s 'Glory Years' were the best of my footballing life I've voted for Adams. I think Mullery was the right man at the right time and quite rightly he will always have a special place in Albion history, but he did inherit a good squad (put together largely by the 'good' Peter Taylor, RIP) and he did play a bit of a long-ball game; hoof up to Mellor, knock down to Ward. His subsequent career however proved that he was not a great manager.

Horton turned us from complete shit into shit. Adams with virtually no resources (certainly without the money available to Mullery) turned us into a very good football team. If he hadn't left we'd be mid-table in Division 1 and FG would be wanting him sacked because we weren't in a play-off position.

Mullery (appointed in '76 not '77) was manager during the Albion's best ever period and any assessment of him is probably coloured by the success of the team during that time.

Adams was manager during an infinitely more difficult time for the Albion and his achievements need to be placed in the context of the odds stacked against him.

Thus while I would always choose the Goldstone in the '76 to '79 era as my most thrilling time as an Albion supporter, I think Adams wins best manager on the basis of sheer ability and will to win.

Mickey Adams for me. Followed by Mullery. Interesting that theres lot's of support for Cattlin on this thread. I think his time in charge of the Albion was my favourite period. I'd recently left home and had a flat down near the fire station. I could walk to the goldstone from there, thinking back it was so nice just turning up at the ground - paying your money - you were in. We had some great players then Danny Wilson, Steve Penny, and I also really rated Chris Hutchins(Chelsea let him go and kept Joey Jones!!!). Also he brought in the odd legend at the end of his carrer eg Joe Corrigan (remember him keeping a clean sheet against Man City with a bad arm injury), Frank Worthington. I remember reading in the paper that he'd been sacked, waiting for a train at Preston Park Station. I was gutted. Looking back I think that was the start of the bad times.

he didnt get a fair crack of the whip when he was harshly sacked, they guy had a team with 2000 people watching most weeks paying 70 miles from home, no money and A SHIT BOARD BEHIND HIM. who konws what he would have acheved given more time?!

My time it has to be Mickey Adams, though Chris Cattlin and Steve Gritt both did fine work. I voted for Mullery though just because of what he achieved in his first spell.
