so why should he HAVE to turn down our offer just because he is waiting for another one?

did you do the same thing for uni, and accept an offer before you knew the full scope of what would be available to you. would you do the same with a job and not wait and see if you could earn more money and work at a better place?

Because he's had a month (possibly more) to think about it now, which is more than enough to make a decision. Unless he's got special circumstances like Reid (which as far as we're all aware he hasn't) then I really feel it's about time he made a decision, considering his potential employers need to know A.S.A.P what's happening as to make plans for the future season.

He can't just keep stalling for another month and then turn us down, because that will bugger us up - we've missed out on good time and money we could have spent on finding another midfield player. He needs to balance his personal and professional responsibilities.

This kind of thing happens at every other club every summer. Its funny how it gets slightly more difficult to persuade players to join the club when they are actually going to IMPROVE the squad. Lets be honest Bas was desperate to join because his record was crap before we signed him, same for most of the other players weve signed in recent years. Bertin will probably be our most important signing since Leon Knight if we get him.

Butters has been probably our best free transfer for years

If the club have any sense at all they will also be looking round for options should Bertin not sign. I would be amazed if they dont have targets lined up should he not sign, negotations may even be taking place with those players now.

Thats true, but it was a big gamble and no disrespect he probably didnt have offers flying at him left right and centre given his fitness at the time, but Hinshlewood saw his previous acheivements and talent he obviously showed before. My point was that Bertin obviously has other very tempting offers but we need to battle against these clubs because he's a quality player, similar situation with Whing.

Bertin is a quality player, he's one of the best in the current crop of players we have

The key word is "quality", which is sadly something we do no not have in abundance at the club. Give me a player with class and good touches over a solid workhorse any day of the week.

if the club aren't making contingency plans then it really is there own fault. there should always be a plan b and a plan c should a transfer not go through - the same with contract negotiations

if it was en english player it would be more frustrating. being a foreigner who apparently speaks very little english and with a family to think of, he may be waiting to see if an offer comes in from a french club, which would no doubt suit him better

I thought we only offered him the deal last week? At least thats when I read Dick Knights comments on it

I'm probably in the wrong, but i was under the impression that the players were let know of the offers when they returned from Prague or whatever it was.

Anyway, fairly irrelevant speculating really - if he's been offered then contract than lets hope he signs it, because you can be sure we'll only end up with a Littlehampton reserve as replacement.

I think the club could reasonably set a deadline for Bertin's response to the offer made some time ago now... but they probably wouldn't do that... let's face it... he is in a good bargaining position...
