Coming your way 15th/16th June.

Inspired in part by real events and set in the Nottinghamshire mining village where Graham grew up, at the heart of Sherwood lie two shocking and unexpected killings that shatter an already fractured community and spark a massive manhunt.

Alongside David Morrissey is a stellar ensemble that comprises Joanne Froggatt, Robert Glenister, Alun Armstrong, Lesley Manville, Adeel Akhtar, Claire Rushbrook, Kevin Doyle, Lorraine Ashbourne, Phillip Jackson, Perry Fitzpatrick, Adam Hugill and Stephen Tompkinson.

Series one of the James Graham-penned show proved to be a critical and audience hit.

Now the BBC says that the second series is set in the present day and introduces two new families that find themselves entangled with the Sparrows, entering a complex web of local gangs, old rivalries, revenge, and betrayal. Meanwhile, a newly appointed Sheriff of Nottingham is passionately fighting against a proposed new mine for the area, which brings the promise of much-needed jobs and prosperity but also unwelcome reminders of the legacy that has mired the community for so long.

David Morrissey, Lorraine Ashbourne and Perry Fitzpatrick return, while new cast members include Monica Dolan, Christine Bottomley, David Harewood, Robert Lindsay, Stephen Dillane, Aisling Loftus and Robert Emms.

Sherwood, written and created by James Graham, will return for a third series the BBC has confirmed.

James Graham says: “It continues to be the greatest privilege to tell stories set in and inspired by the history of my home county of Nottinghamshire. Having a returning series on the BBC is pretty much every British writer’s dream, and I’m incredibly grateful for the continued passion that Lindsay, Charlotte and Jo have for Sherwood – and to everyone at House Productions, the most supportive producers you can have. My biggest appreciation though goes to our audiences and I’m determined to deliver for them in a series three, which will be a new set of stories, and the continuation – and completion – of some strands I’ve been dreaming of for some time.”

The BBC has announced the return of Showtrial.

The second series will star Adeel Akhtar, Nathalie Armin, and Michael Socha, and will once again centre around a criminal trial that divides the nation and takes place in the full glare of the media spotlight.

When the high-profile climate activist Marcus Calderwood is left for dead in a violent hit and run, he uses his dying moments to identify his killer – a serving policeman. But who is this unnamed ‘Officer X’? What does his own history reveal about the nature of trauma and revenge, and was Marcus’s death a careless accident or cold-blooded murder?

From the victim’s last breath to the jury’s final verdict, Showtrial takes us into the worlds of the charismatic and cocky officer Justin Mitchell (Socha); Sam Gill (Akhtar), an anxious defense solicitor with a reputation for winning lost causes; and Leila Hassoun-Kenny (Armin), a rigorous CPS lawyer leading the case against the accused.
Did they, didn’t they legal drama Showtrial is back for a second series, and now we know when it’s going to start.

Telling a brand new original story, the latest instalment in the anthology series sees climate activist Marcus Calderwood (Barney Fishwick) left for dead in a violent hit and run. He uses his dying moments to apparently identify his killer – a serving policeman.

The second series introduces us to the charismatic and cocky police officer Justin Mitchell (Michael Socha); Sam Malik (Adeel Akhtar) an anxious defence solicitor with a reputation for winning lost causes; DI Miles Southgate (Joe Dempsie), brought in from a neighbouring force to investigate, and Leila Hassoun-Kenny (Nathalie Armin) a driven CPS lawyer leading the case against the accused.

As public outrage reaches fever-pitch, the series asks what happens when a trial is dominated by cultural divisions and if the truth is ever clear cut. Is a fair trial even possible when tensions are riding so high?

Sunday 6th October, 9pm, BBC One

Cleddau is solid if not spectacular. A less dark and grimy version of the brilliant Hinterland it has its moments, I quite enjoyed it.

Harrington is a less intense character, and the show is slightly the worse for it.

6 x 45 minutes.

Worth a punt.

Been excellent, the 'will they/won't they?' continues and a decent plot.

Certainly sets up S6.
Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger are reprising their roles in BBC One’s Robert Galbraith adaptation, Strike.

The Ink Black Heart will be the show’s sixth series, and the BBC says it will be back next month (December).

When frantic, desperate Edie Ledwell appears in the office begging to speak to her, private detective Robin Ellacott doesn’t know quite what to make of the situation. The co-creator of a popular cartoon, The Ink Black Heart, Edie is being persecuted by a mysterious online figure who goes by the pseudonym of Anomie. Edie is desperate to uncover Anomie’s true identity.

Robin informs Edie that the agency is too busy to take on her case and thinks nothing more of it until a few weeks later, when she reads the shocking news that Edie has been tasered and then murdered in Highgate Cemetery, the location of The Ink Black Heart.

Robin and her business partner Cormoran Strike become drawn into the quest to uncover Anomie’s true identity. But with a complex web of online aliases, business interests and family conflicts to navigate, Strike and Robin find themselves embroiled in a case that stretches them to their limit.

The guest cast include David Westhead, Christian McKay, Emma Fielding, Tupele Dorgu and James Nelson-Joyce.

For anyone interested in politics and modern history, the 5-part ‘Watergate’ documentary on iPlayer should be essential viewing. It was actually made in 1994 but was reshown recently, perhaps to mark the 50th anniversary of Nixon’s
resignation? I binge-watched it on a long flight yesterday and thought it utterly compelling. The interviews, with every one of the main players, are incredibly frank. Highly recommended.

Ridiculous plot involving online gaming, film rights and preposterous false usernames.
The main two hold it together with the 'will they, won't they?' but that's becoming close to the limit now and they need to jump in the sack.
I think if it wasn't those strong characters at the centre it would be a poor mini series.
Still, let's see what the next one brings......
All just my humble opinion of course.

Started watching The Gold on iPlayer, about the £27m gold bullion raid from the Brinks-Mat guarded compound at Heathrow in 1983. I'm a sucker for anything 80s and this has really captured the "look" of the time. Only 1 episode in but its really decent so far. Strong characters, well scripted.
The BBC has announced that season 2 of factual crime drama The Gold is just around the corner.

The series is inspired by the true story and theories of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, which saw the theft of £26 million worth of gold bullion, and the decades-long chain of events that followed.

Following multiple court cases and convictions of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold, the police realised that they had only ever been on the trail of half of the Brink’s-Mat gold. Series two is inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the other half. As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The Brink’s-Mat Task Force embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police.

Returning cast include Hugh Bonneville (Brian Boyce), Charlotte Spencer (Nicki Jennings), Emun Elliott (Tony Brightwell), Tom Cullen (John Palmer), Stefanie Martini (Marnie Palmer) and Sam Spruell (Charlie Miller) as the investigation around what happened to the gold continues to unfold. Additional returning cast includes Peter Davison (Assistant Commissioner Gordon Stewart), Amanda Drew(CS Cath McClean), Silas Carson (Harry Bowman) and James Nelson-Joyce (Brian Reader).

New cast members are Tom Hughes, Stephen Campbell Moore, Joshua McGuire, Tamsin Topolski, Joshua Samuels, Rochelle Neil, Antonia Desplat, Lorna Brown, Thomas Coombes, Sean Teale and Olivia Grant.
