I've been to both places, and I can't remember getting ripped off for drinks in Barcelona (at least not as much as Venice). But in Barcelona, most places I went too only served these -
That's a travesty that I'm going to have to drink large beers, we were in Rhodes and I asked for a large beer, waqs expecting a pint & they brought out a f***ing massive glass boot full of Mythos. I haven't got a clue how much was in there but it was sunk in 25 minutes

You'll both love Barca (if you don't get your pockets picked): it's a tres-spesh city. If you fancy a bit of Kulcha, like, & you're familiar with Joan Miró's work, I'd heartily recommend going to The Miró Foundation on Montjuic. The Camp Nou tour is well worth the effort too; & a hidden gem is an historic Carva Bar at the bottom of the Gothic Quarter (in amongst various electrical wholesalers). Can't remember the name of it, but it's fab! Then there's the awe-inspiring La Segrada Família (wouldn't bother paying to go in though); La Rambla; Parc Guell; The Olympic Stadium; etc etc etc.

We went last year and were determined not to look like tourists and to avoid the tour buses but gave in in the end as its so easy and convenient, just ask at your hotel reception and they should be able to explain it.
Go to the Spanish Village on the way up the hill to the Olympic site. Its a mock up village made up of examples of streets and buildings from different Spanish regions. It is full of different art workshops as well so you can watch people blowing glass and other stuff like that. Its one of the stops on the tour bus and we probably wouldnt have been in if we hadnt done the tour.

Spanish Seagull - thinking of taking Mrs TRHK over the Easter weekend. Do you know if that would be a good time (festivities, fun and frolicking in a Catholic country) or does everything shut down and off to Mama's for the weekend?

TRHK.....Easter is a good time to come.
Weather should be OK. Lots of local fiestas going on.
Best time to avoid is August when nearly ALL the Spanish take the entire month off & head up or down the coast for their vacations.

Barcelona is a fantastic city, loads of things for everyone to do regardless of age and interests. I was in Barcelona 3 weeks ago for a long weekend with the Mrs and we both enjoyed it. Try and arrange a time when Barca are playing at home and work that into the trip too. Brilliant stadium and no write up on any site does the atmosphere and the sheer excitement of the place justice.
Dont forget to visit Port Olimpic and Port Vell, the former with loads of fantastic restaurants, especially if you like your seafood. They also do some blinding steaks down there too! A trip on the cable cars is a must and if the Colombus tower is open at the bottom of La Rambla is open you must go up there. It surely offers some of the best views of the city!
I cannot stress enough though, and it does put a bit of a downer on things - PICKPOCKETS. Underestimate them at your peril! My Mrs had her handbag snatched down La on the Friday night and I also had my camera stolen out of my jacket pocket on the Sunday night. Luckily, it was only a cheapy camera as I knew it happens all too often and my Mrs didnt have anything in her bag particularly valuable. The scary thing about the camera incident is that I didnt even feel a thing - they are so proffesional.
Another couple staying in our hotel also had a wallet and mobile phone stolen on the metro whilst alighting at Plaza de Catalunya - again near La Rambla. Once again, please be careful and DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES take anymore money than you need for the amount of time you are out of the hotel. That goes for credit cards too!
