Back home - wasn't even worth the petrol money

I haven't read all the posts so apologies if i repeat anything that has been said but i wanted to vent.

Forget frustrating or disapointing, that was embarrasing this afternoon. The irony was we came out and took hold of the game, had Stoke on the back foot, in fact like so many matches this season i thought we were going to control the outcome as well.

There will have been comments about bad refereeing (and there was) the bald linesman was totally inept but the decisions would have been less obvious if we had played better and no one would have cared about them if we had won.

So we know the team guys can play, every now and again they prove it. What they cant' do is deal with a game mentally. Watch their body language to see what i mean.

When the first goal went in (which Stoke really didn't deserve) we saw the players shoulders drop, despite having been in control for the previous 30 minutes. Not long after a dire refereeing decision that saw 2 yellows rather than 1 red and the heads dropped. In their own minds it was going against them, rather than deal with it positively they let that negativity control the final outcome.

Think i'm talking boll*cks? Let me put it this way, what is the difference between a good team and a great team? A great team never gives up, players that keep on going, playing the ball like their life depended on it right until the final whistle. How many games (not just Brighton) have been won in or even drawn in the 89th minute, injury or extra time? Too many to count.

Stoke played rough, dodgy tackles, pushing, pulling and faking. But strangely only after they scored their first goal and then they started taking the piss out of us after their second. But the team were not up to dealing with it. Chris coming on was a fresh input of energy but he was never going to change the outcome on his own. They need some beleif, they need some serious motivation to quote Henry Ford they need to be able to "roll with the punches"

Long and short of it they weren't outplayed by Stoke, they were outplayed by themselves.

That sounds like a fair assessment upnorthnow, some very reasoned comments and I think you're right.

The trouble is, I don't think we have any natural leaders on the pitch at the moment. We've got no driving force, no experienced, battle-hardened player in the team who can captain the side and lift them when things are going against us. Not that I particularly miss Cullip from the team, but he DID have that "never say die" attitude that could galvanise the team and keep them going. Who is there now ? Guys clearly the most experienced, but he doesn't strike me as really being a leader in that team.

We've got a lot of young players who could do with a little more leadership on the field I think.

Think you might be right, we do have a very young team but need to have the old heads (Butters, Oatway, Carpenter and possibly Dodd) on the pitch to give the team a bit of steel and drive, unfortunately today Guy looked off sorts and somewhat like a clown at a childrens party, worried about what might happen next.

Well it wouldn't solve everything, but I think it'd help. How or where we'd get someone like that is another matter....
I've always rated Graham Kavanagh. Obviously he's well out of our league, but I'd like someone like him at our club.

I think that is a very good point, and it ties in with what i said about motivation. The right person tying it all togerther could make all the differnce. A little bit of attention off the pitch to rebuild morale and then someone to keep the guys focused.

A seperate issue is that amount of time i have seen our players with an open run on goal pass wide rather than have the guts to take it forward. though that could also be a confidence/beleif thing. Of our current squad, i think i'd like to see what Dodd could do in that role.

Today it was frustrating at times, Seb faffed around on the wing with the ball rather than drive towards the box, at least if he had tried to do that a little more often we may have drawn a few more free kicks and one or two of their defence may have had an early bath.

Sounds like us when we won our back-to-back Championships, really. It may be that we're just not quite good enough to play this expansive, attacking game at the moment, and need to revert to something more natural to us.

With most of our first-choice midfield out injured, it's inevitable that we are not going to be tough and streetwise enough in every game. We just have to grit our teeth and get on with it, starting with a double over Palace :)

It's great innit - a bad defeat and no one can finger either Oatway or McCammon.

Interesting to see who is third scapegoat in line, and amazingly, it looks as if it's the manager

I don't think we're in a mess, I think we're in DREAMLAND - 2nd tier, best squad for nearly 15 yrs, new ground, great bloke as a manager, only 2 away defeats this season - we've had it a lot worse than this

onwards

However I would love the team to do more with their corners and free kicks. Seems like since Watto left, the set-piece goals have dried up slightly (obviously, apart from the lad McShane getting a few)

Did anybody really expect to win at Stoke?
We never have done before.
