Reading the thread about Palace's 'impressive' away following today got me thinking (there was plenty of time for that while stuck on the M25).
Why is it that many coastal clubs, or clubs well away from the main areas of population, tend to have impressive away followings, particularly as geographically they have further to travel than 'inland' clubs?
Maybe this is a myth, but thinking of clubs such as Pompey, Southampton, Plymouth, Swansea, Cardiff, Newcastle, Sunderland, Norwich, Ipswich and of course Brighton, they always seem to have good away following.
Obviously there are some exceptions, such as Gillingham and Southend who never seem to have massive away support (I am prepared to be corrected).
Is this really the case? Why? Is it something to do with the social make up of such areas? Is it something to do with the fact that geographically the teams are more isolated leading to stronger support?
