Away support of coastal clubs

Reading the thread about Palace's 'impressive' away following today got me thinking (there was plenty of time for that while stuck on the M25).

Why is it that many coastal clubs, or clubs well away from the main areas of population, tend to have impressive away followings, particularly as geographically they have further to travel than 'inland' clubs?

Maybe this is a myth, but thinking of clubs such as Pompey, Southampton, Plymouth, Swansea, Cardiff, Newcastle, Sunderland, Norwich, Ipswich and of course Brighton, they always seem to have good away following.

Obviously there are some exceptions, such as Gillingham and Southend who never seem to have massive away support (I am prepared to be corrected).

Is this really the case? Why? Is it something to do with the social make up of such areas? Is it something to do with the fact that geographically the teams are more isolated leading to stronger support?

Discuss...!!!

Number of clubs in the area. We have no club within 55 or miles or whatever it is Palace are, the catchment area is greater.

I've always thought that we had amazing Away support. I think we have oustanding support full stop. NSC its self is testiment to that. Sure, liverpool, and the like have multiple message boards ect, but lower down the chain, we have got an impressive and still massivly used and well documented tool. Sure, atmosphere at withdean is dead, but a young girl maybe 13/4 on Sarahs coach today was talking about how many shirts she has, and how she has skipped school to watch us ect, which is impressive. If i could get away with cutting college to see brighton i would, but i can't afford to because of EMA. Oh and my edumacation :lolol:

The away support is trying to keep in touch with the football stadium concept prior to our Falmer move.

Anyone know how many Albion were there yesterday?

Not too sure, but a heck of a lot, must have been over 800 at least, i'd say closer to 1000, i'm not too sure what our allocation was, 1800? in which case, i'd say 1000+ but certinally no less than 800.

Reckon near on 1200. A steward outside said we'd sold 900 of the original allocated 1800, and there seemed to be loads more like us queueing to pay on the gate.
