I'd be greatly saddened to see Ashley go. Very rarely do you get a player at a club that gives you 110% every game even during the times they are out of form and not playing well.

Hopefully it's not true!

The two-goal hero of Saturday’s 3-0 home win against Blackburn Rovers attracted three transfer bids from Burnley during the August transfer window.

Barnes, out of contract at the end of the season, revealed to The Argus: “I felt like I was getting pushed out of the club but that’s besides the point.

“I want to be here for as many years as possible but I need to be given the opportunity to be here and obviously it’s the people upstairs that make that decision.


“I am just going to fight for my career until the end of the season and hopefully get offered a new deal.

“I’ve only just scored two goals but I want to be here for a long time. This is where I see my life and my family is settled here. I’ve got a house and everything so why do I need to move?”

Barnes was aware of sceptical fans when he grabbed the chance ahead of David Lopez to take a first-half penalty and end a Championship goal drought stretching back to April before adding his 50th in 160 appearances for the club.

He said: “There were boos and stuff like that but that’s part and parcel of football, that’s my job and I can handle pressure, that’s not a problem.

“I am going to get that anywhere, it’s just one of those things. I’ve had it before I came here and I’m getting it now but, do you know what, it’s not a problem and I take it on the chin.

“Whatever someone thinks it’s their own opinion and everyone has their own say. All I want to do is give 100% and see where it goes.

“It’s the gaffer’s decision to play me. If he didn’t like me then it would be a problem but I’m playing and I’ve just got to keep going and work my socks off.”

Moments before the penalty, the ball broke to him and he had a clear run on goal and his first two touches took him away from the goal and he failed to get a shot anywhere near on target. A few minutes later we get a penalty and he grabs the ball and,yes, there was a groan because his record for penalties isn't good but fair play to him he put it away. His second goal that game was a tap in from a rebound. The Bournemouth goal was spectacular but is a very isolated case. It's all very well Barnes going on about staying and it is up to those upstairs but he has had an offer on the table since the summer and it is clear that he values himself higher than the club otherwise he would have signed. Having said that, I take with a pinch of salt what footballers say in the media, exactly with the same disdain as when they kiss the club badge. He has been with us nearly 4 years which is a long time in anyones book. If he won't sign and is trying to play hard ball then we have no option other than to sell and get some money to strengthen the squad.

Anyone know if Plymouth have a sell on clause? During their financial problems, they were letting players go cheaply but with a sell on. I think this was the case with Noone.

It always makes me laugh when people try to claim tap ins are somehow lucky goals that should almost be discounted. It's a striker's job to get in the right positions to score tap ins, it's the main part of their role! Gary Lineker made a career out of it. Were the 48 goals he scored for England 'just tap ins'?

A striker scoring a goal from a tap in from a rebound means he was doing his job perfectly.

The question becomes why does he want to leave? Why won't he sign a new contract? Is it because of the abuse he still gets from the stands?

We don't know if he wants to leave. We do know he hasn't signed a contract which means that (if confirmed) if the clubs have agreed fees then a) Albion want to protect their asset/get a fee for him now rather than a free transfer in the summer b) have plans to strengthen the squad up front fairly well advanced - ie: Obika +1

Well it depends on how far ahead you look.

Maybe not a backward step in the next 1-2 years, but to leave a club on an upward trajectory, soon to have world class training facilities to improve his game, and, dare I say it, better equipped to sustain PL football, could be seen to be short sighted.

At the end of the day if he does not sign a contract would we rather have the 1million to re invest or keep Ash till May but risk losing him for free? Problem is will be be able to find a decent replacement in this window? Need more than 2 fit strikers. This is the reason Burnley want Barnes.

Have we got a replacement lined up then as it would be madness for the club to carry on with only two fit and available strikers.

Well it depends on how far ahead you look.

Maybe not a backward step in the next 1-2 years, but to leave a club on an upward trajectory, soon to have world class training facilities to improve his game, and, dare I say it, better equipped to sustain PL football, could be seen to be short sighted.

But by the time we get there (if we ever do), Barnes may well be nowhere near the first team. Burnley in their position represents a risk for sure, because they not go up and he might be stuck at a smaller club with an inferior infrastructure to the Albion. But if he is offered a better pay deal, that would soften the blow. And IMO he's at least as likely to play in the Prem with them as he is for us.
