Are Women Less Reliable Than Men?

I've worked in my current position for two and a half years, as part of a workforce fairly equally divided between the sexes.

In that time I could count on very few fingers the amount of times one of my male employees has called in sick, yet the women seem to do it every 5 minutes (including two this morning, hence the thread now).

I'm curious as to whether this is an isolated thing or whether others have noticed the same in their workplaces?

No, some people are just flakey. I had a male collegue call in sick with a pulled hamstring, for 3 consecutive days.

Or could be women have to deal with all the family emergencies because (select any of the following) 1)she is a single parent 2) she is the primary care giver 3) she is the lower earner in the family 4) her partner expects her to deal with it all.

This. Obviously.

Although I do draw the line at one woman in our office who called in sick because she had to look after her daughter who had been sick overnight. I wouldn't mind but her daughter is 17 years old FFS.

My manager is constantly having days off, being late and leaving early for illness, family issues, etc etc blah blah. I have never been late or called in sick and yesterday I was 10 minutes late because of the snow and she went f***ing insane. It definitely is a woman thing.

Yeah I would go with this. Though we have some males in my place always calling in sick, makes me embarrassed because everyone makes jokes about man flu and blokes being pathetic etc. No day off in the 7 years I have worked here for me :)

Men do it as well, but women tend to be worse in my experience. My missis attends early morning gym classes 2 or 3 times a week and has told me of women who will attend the gym class then, when chatting in the changing rooms afterwards, tell her that they're off work 'sick' and somehow rationalise this sort of behaviour as not taking the piss.

My girlfriend was sacked from her last job for constantly turning up late for work. The funny thing is that it was always for the same reason, she couldn't find her keys. It used to drive her insane because she was adamant she always left them in the same place but for some reason, they would turn up somewhere else in the house the next morning. In the end she was unable to sleep and kept getting up to check in the night that they were in the same place. But by the time I left every morning just before her they were somewhere else. Strange. Anyway, she doesn't have to worry anymore as she is now long-term unemployed but she still worries a lot.

I think its down to the individual - both can be unreliable and have different things to rationalise or justify their time off.

My personal favourite was a woman I worked with who took two weeks off as she was suffering depression in the wake of the dealth of Princess Diana.

Staggering.

Down to work ethic, not gender.

That's my view on it as well, I've not missed a day at work in over 7 years, not since I was 18 and had a royal hangover which I couldn't handle!

Some things there's nothing you can do about it, but not always.

Women generally fill their pretty little heads with stuff that really doesn't matter ie tv , showbiz gossip , what to wear etc etc. Doesnt leave much room for the important things

Gender issue

I got a letter a couple of years ago congratulating me for not having taken a sick day for the previous 12 months. As there was no bonus for this achievement I took it as an invitation to take a couple of days off sick instead!
