[Albion] Are we the poorest side to survive a PL season?

On February 2nd we played Watford off the park.
The only thing stopping us from winning was an outstanding display from foster.

We have beaten Palace home and away with convincing, well organised defence and devastating finishing.
We have taken 4 points of Media darlings Wolves and West Ham.
Manchester City decided to play in the corner to protect their 1 -0 lead in the dying moments of the FA cup semi-final.
We are not a poor team.

We have had next to no luck in 2019 and results have gone against us.
The team's confidence has gone...
But we are still not a poor team.

I have to admit that you make good points there especially about the confidence but it’s not just the teams imo.

Anyway we go again and I have no doubt CH will be at the helm even if some of us are not convinced at the moment.

There should be some big changes between now and next season, going to be a fascinating close season I hope

Of course we are not; one of those chances goes in against Watford and/or we take the lead against Burnley where batters them in the first ten minutes and this season looks very different.

Those things didn’t happen, we lost a couple of home games so the manager did what he needed to do and ground out a couple of painful to watch results to watch to get us over the line.

At Xmas people asked if we could achieve the best result ever by a Brighton side now we are the worst top flight team ever....

This and this.

The whole complexion of the season would look very different if we’d have marbleised Watford as we SHOULD have done.

That game could have ended 3 or 4 - 1 were it not for Foster and yet if it had I think people would be saying we were lucky etc.

We have that type of performance in us against the ‘other 14’ because our squad isn’t bad, our manager does know what he is doing but neither can legislate for injuries to our two most creative/expansive outlets or the huge drop in confidence that was in all probability brought about by scenarios like the Watford game.

Yes I’ve been critical at times but are we the poorest team to have survived ever in the Premier League? Not by a long long long long way.

Of course we’re not. Don’t be ridiculous. Off the top of my head, Sunderland and Aston Villa were shambolic - and we’ve rarely been that. We just had a bad run at a bad stage that dropped us into trouble. If it had been early in the season, little would have been made of it by now. We didn’t even end up in the bottom 3 at any point.

We're not the worst team to survive in the EPL, but with 2 games left, statistics show that we're clearly one of the worst teams to survive based on points alone.

If goal difference weakens by more than 3 with 2 losses over the Arsenal and Man City games, we'll be 2nd worst since the EPL became a 20 team league.

Points total of team finishing in 17th position

44 - Bolton (2002-2003)

42 - Derby (2000-2001)

41 - Coventry (1996-1997); Southampton (1998-1999))

40 - Everton (1997-1998); Sunderland (2001-2002); Wolves (2010-2011); Watford (2016-2017)

39 - Everton (2003-2004); Sunderland (2012-2013); Sunderland (2015-2016)

38 - Southampton (1995-1996); Portsmouth (2005-2006); Wigan (2006-2007); Aston Villa (2014-2015); Southampton (2017-2018)

37 - QPR (2011-2012)

36 - Bradford (1999-2000); Fulham (2007-2008); West Brom (2013-2014)

35 - Hull (2008-2009) GD = -25; West Ham (2009-2010) GD = -19; BRIGHTON (2018-2019) GD = -22

34 - West Brom (2004-2005)

To reach where we were around Christmas suggests not; you don't reach the position we did being a complete shambles. However it was very rarely good to watch even in that first half of the season, in fact we were really bloody lucky in a fair few games. Still, we got bodies behind the ball and took our 1 or 2 shots on target so we were at least consistent.

Second half of the season, well I'm sure we'd all agree that if we play the entirety of next season how we've ended this one we'd not only be one of the worst ever prem teams but we'd also break a few records in terms of points/shots on goal etc!

I'm sure we won't though. This summer will be an interesting one!

Are Spurs one of the worst teams to (likely) finish 3rd - they've lost 13 times !
(ie: because the table is skewed by the top 2 and the top 6)

Last season, look at Watford's form , even after they changed manager in January.
They won only 5 games out of 24 after the end of November, had 1 win in 12 over Christmas/Jan/Feb, and another spell that finished the season of 1 win in 9.
They had some thumpings - lost 5-0 to Liverpool, 6-0 to Man City, and also lost to the relegation teams - 1-0 to Hudds last April and 2-1 at home to Swansea.
Their early season form kept them up.

This season of course they've had their best season in the Prem League / top flight for a generation and got to the cup final.
Is the lesson of this - change manager ? or that teams in that bottom 14 do go though periods and blips where the confidence goes and they struggle. Its normal.

Well it's not a load of shit at all . . . .26 from 21 is good enough, (and was lucky!) but 9 from 15, a possible 45 points?, 0.6 a game, that would be 23 in a season, that's bad, which ever way you look at it, we've been worse than last season. I'm extremely grateful we've survived, but that's all, it's been a bad year as far as performances, entertainment and progression is concerned.

No, of course not.
We had around 26 points from our first 21 games.
What a load of shit.

And somebody is responsible given the amount of money spent. TB has the full details and picture and will do something about it I’m sure. Exciting possibly, but certainly interesting times coming up I think.

We have not improved.

And agreed . A lot of NSC posters are saying that.. And presumably given we're not likely to get more than last seasons 40 points you can objectively say that. (Although as a club we've had another year's ££s to develop in multiple ways) . But you started a thread asking if we were the worst EVER ? in 25 odd years ? Why ? Based on what ?

Good work! Interesting that the longer the PL goes on, the greater the disparity between top and bottom. The top teams are getting better, resulting in the poorer teams getting fewer points. I don’t think this will ever even up with the current set up. Maybe there is an argument for a Euro super league after all. It just might even out the rest of us.

That's got nothing to do with the question asked and the figures given. There's really no need to deflect.

Which part of the statistics quoted is factually incorrect, however much it may go against the narrative and be difficult for club apologists to swallow?

Its to do with the thread which is asking if Albion are the worst ever ? The quality and points total of other teams in that season will be a factor in that.
Not difficult to swallow at all. Do wonder why there's such a lot of posts arguing in great detail over and over if we are the worst at this or how bad we are a few hours after we find out we're safe for another year but fair enough.

Some people love to hate football, it’s that simple really.

So does that mean that we can't draw any accurate conclusions as every season's different with varying team quality?

Sorry, but that doesn't wash at all. It's not just a short time period over a few years. It's over 24 of them.

Regardless of how it's spun, another 2 losses with a few goals conceded and we'll have the 2nd worst 17th place finish.

Safe or not, the numbers don't lie....however much we'd all like them to.

It's a funny old game.

If we had got the exact same results but reversed the first and last halves of the season, I suspect (apart from the usual suspects) the Joy on here would be inestimable.

But that still means we have been good enough to stay up
