Messages will default to sending an iMessage (for free) if the destination phone is an iPhone. The message will be blue to indicate this. If the destination phone is not known to be an iPhone, or you don't have data connectivity, it will go as an SMS and be charged according to your contract/network plan. These will be green.

(I've no idea on other apps for this as my £10/mo GiffGaff plan includes unlimited text (and data) so is not a concern.)

I have one of the original Iphone's (3g is it ?) and never been able to receive a picture message, just get a text directing me to a web address for retrievable, is this app to stop this?

contact ya provider i have the 3g and get picture text no issue, is some setting that need to be installed on your phone, literally is just a text

NavFree - Free sat nav, accurate enough and FREE
Geocaching - about £7 but great treasure hunting fun, there is a FREE trial version, check it out!
TV Catchup - Watch over 50 channels live for free including all the freeview ones, bbc, itv, c4 etc etc
