"1971 Renamed the Vogue Cinema; programming changed to pornography with live strip shows"

I'd forgotten about the live strip shows. Conjures up images of that Striptease in the the Steptoe and Son movie from about that time!

My God... I was brought up just down the road from that cinema, and could swear it's where I used to go to "Saturday Morning Cinema" as a kid. Flash Gordon, not Flesh Gordon as far as I can remember, and surely no strippers. Mind you, I'd have still thought they were mobile milk stalls back then :)

What was the name of the cinema in Haywards Heath (or was it Burgess Hill)? I'm sure that had an exotic name. I seem to remember there was one near HH station.

I'm almost certain that the one in Haywards Heath was "The Perrymount" - it was directly opposite the bus station in Perrymount Road.

As for Burgess Hill, I'm still pleased to see the Orion going strong. I saw my first ever "proper" film there - Jailhouse Rock - which was a deal more entertaining than the film my mother thought we were going to see which was "Sink The Bismarck"! The Orion was owned by Miles Byrne who also ran The Essoldo in Western Road if I remember rightly.

When I was really little we used to go to the Cartoon Cinema in North Street - where Burger King is now - which I think was the "Jaycee".

Old cinemas.??

The Gaiety at the bottom of Hollingdean Rd,
The Arcadia known as the Scratch. I believe it was turned into the local Labour Party Club. Lewes Rd about a block north of Elm Grove.
Cinema Deluxe halfway up North St on the north side.
The Princes top of North St just below West St.
The Imperial opposite the Princes.
The Acadamy West St just up from the Odeon on the other side.
The Curzon, Western Rd., Hove I believe.
What Memories.
Thanks for the nostalgia.

In 1972, shortly after the Jacey in North Street became the Brighton Film Theatre, I'd just got back to Brighton from 15 months living in Italy.

Feeling nostalgic, I was delighted when the Brighton Festival put on a series of Italian films there. The programme changed daily - and was accompanied by a Flash (not Flesh) Gordon serial, with a new episode every day. By the end of the Festival, there was a hard core (not hardcore) of enthusiasts turning up just for the Flash Gordon.

A lot of people, especially flat dwellers like me, still didn't have TVs in those days.

Marvellous scenes.

The last film they showed at that place was 'The Last Picture Show'.

The Continentale and the Embassy (not the Essoldo, Roz) were both run by a dodgy bloke called Miles Byrne. The Continentale was particularly wonderful, with a hand cranked curtain, operated by a little old lady. I saw loads of films there in the late 1960s. There was always a black and white slide show advertising forthcoming attractions. Week after week, we were promised "COMING SOON - JULIE CHRISTIE IN DARLING". I don't think they EVER showed it.

:)

Was the cinema along Western Road called the Classic?

I remember seeing Star Wars there

I went to the Classic for its penultimate show..... a Saturday afternoon (I would have gone to the last show, but Saturday night? Come On!) ... to see The Warriors.

THe REgent as I have been reminded, was where Boots is now. It was the Largest Cinema I believe outside of London. I know that if Boots had knocked it down , it would have been Listed as a building of historic interest.

I saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks there as well as Alien.:lolol:

I saw the likes of The Rolling Stones, T-Rex, Johnny Winter, Status Quo:blush: (back-up to T-Rex) in the upstairs bit which used to be the ballroom-complete with sprung floor. Didn't they re-name it "Big Apple"? Fantastic venue except trying to get in and out which was a disaster waiting to happen-narrow staircase with a couple of thousand pissed and stoned hippies involved...happy days indeed.

No, but I remember the ABC in West Hove .... used to go to ABC Minors every Saturday Morning .... three cartoons, one feature movie and stink bombs and sweets galour ..... and then there was the ABC Minors song!!!!!

Happy days .....

I remember that as "The Granada" before it went ABC.

What was the cinema in North Street, Portslade called? Think my mother worked there for a while. It's still there I believe but was used for years as a paper recycling place-rumoured to be home to hundreds of rats...

I used to go to the Granada. I saw Summer Holiday several times and Hard Day's Night as many times as I could afford.

I think you mean the Rothbury in Portslade. It used to get the B movies like horror films which were so funny. The Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Green Mare's Nest spring to mind.

The Regent used to be a ballroom before it became a cinema.

Yorkie-I remember The Rothbury but there was also a cinema in North Street too...opposite what used to be H. Baker (builer's merchants).

The building is still there; don't ask me what it was called though!

The bingo hall in Portland road used to be an ABC cinema. We're talking very early 70's here - when I went to Aldrington C of E Infants School (which is now a nursery school, I think).

Yes the Aldrington C of E is a nursery. There are now a row of town houses just about nearing completion at the Marmion Road end where some of the school playing area has been used.

As for the Bingo Hall(former ABC Hove) that is now derelict and boarded up ready for demolishing. I'm led to believe that some sheltered housing is due to be built on the site.

I also remember the "ABC Minor's" song at the "saturday morning pictures" as we used to call it. The best bit was the rush for the exits at the end when about 3 or 4 layers of kids would end up at the doors in the crush. You couldn't do that now, what with the Health and Safety laws. Happy days................

When I lived in South Africa in the late 60's early 70's, I used to go on a Saturday morning to the Picadilly, a cinema in Yeovelle, just outside Joburg.

There was normally a band playing ( the Fireflies playing Monkees stuff) a serial, like Zorro or Flash Gordon, and then a main feature like The Love Bug or something like that.

marvellous scenes

And yes you guessed it, not a black face in sight!!! ( very alarming it was)

It closed down as a ballroom around 67? when the Brighton centre was built and was just a cinema then.

I did go dancing there for 2 or 3 years but my Mother used to dance there in the 40's and 50's.

As said before the Granada (later the ABC) was my main cinema or the Rothbury (more commonly known as the Fleapit)

It was definitely still a ballroom in 1965 as my mother got me the autographs of the entire South African squad (I wasn't aware of apartheid when I was 8) when they went there. I lost them when we moved house though :(

The ballroom was on the upper floor above the cinema-and frigging huge it was too. Never knew it existed until 1970/71 when loads of concerts were put on there-including Elton John who cancelled because he had a cold; poor love.

Why don't they build stuff like that anymore?
