"1971 Renamed the Vogue Cinema; programming changed to pornography with live strip shows"

I'd forgotten about the live strip shows. Conjures up images of that Striptease in the the Steptoe and Son movie from about that time!

I remember the Classic pretty well.

Back in the 70's after a night out you could watch a movie there and get a breakfast at the same time. Which just about every did.

It's now been swallowed up by Waitrose in Western Road.

The cinema that's now Boots in North St was the Regent. My mum worked there for a bit, so I saw Sound of Music for nothing :)

Whitelion has just reminded me of the joy of going to the Classic/Curzon for their all-night movies. It was cool stumbling out into the light of the morning and going for brekkie.

Where was the Regent. There was two Rank cinemas in West Street. Were they the Academy and the Odeon. Wasnt there also two ABC one in Brighton and one in Hove (Portland Road?)

Do you remember any of the movies you saw there?

Or the breakfasts?

When I was a kid I used to go to the Seaford Ritz as my neighbour's Mum was an usherette there. She was also none other than Sussex Cricketer's Alan and Colin Wells Mum! They were much older than me though, and it was their younger sister Linda who was my age.

The Seaford Ritz (where Safeway is now) was a dump. They used to close half of it off at a time so that they could clean the other part. When in the balcony all the kids used to throw their rubbish into the stalls below. I think it finally died a death in the late 1970's

What was the name of the cinema in Haywards Heath (or was it Burgess Hill)? I'm sure that had an exotic name. I seem to remember there was one near HH station.

Christ, the ABC's gone? I'm not sure I was aware of that. Is the Astoria still a bingo hall? I saw Jaws there.

Snap - I saw "Jaws" there too. About 1976 ?

Lewes' last cinema (in the Cliffe) closed down a few years before that.

THe REgent as I have been reminded, was where Boots is now. It was the Largest Cinema I believe outside of London. I know that if Boots had knocked it down , it would have been Listed as a building of historic interest.

I saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks there as well as Alien.:lolol:

yep. I remember I was shitting myself even before I got in because I went with a mate. We were both aged 10 and it was an A. The rules were that if you were under 12 you had to be accompanied by an adult. They weren't bothered in the slightest.

That face coming through the wreckage! Still get nightmares about that..................

Being a bit older I remember a lot of the older cinemas where they always showed 2 quality films on a double bill.

The one in Western Road was the Embassy - saw The Good The Bad and The Ugly there

The Regent was where Boots is now - saw the Battle Of Britain and The Poseidon there.

The Classic became the Curzon - I think that's Burger King in North Street now.

ABC Brighton at the bottom of East Street was one large cinema then split into 3 and now shut

ABC Hove in Portland Road was also huge and is now a Bingo Hall

Astoria (saw JAWS there in 1974) was even bigger and was full the evening I went.

Continental and Vogue were soft porn cinemas where us teenagers could get in to aged 15. Films on Channel 4 nowadays have more sex. There were "private" cinemas in the Brighton area for members showing soft porn. One was by Preston Circus and they wouldn't let me in ..... I was 15

I can even remember going to the Rothbury in Franklin Road Portslade which is now Southern FM!!

The only cinema that comes close is The Dome in Worthing which still reminds me of all these old cinemas.

Happy days.

They used to have lots of rock movies: Woodstock, Monterey Pop etc. I remember a Jimi Hendrix all-nighter, which in truth was overkill. I also remember a Lenny Bruce late-nighter which included a documentary about him and some clips of his shows.

Can't remember where we went for breakfasts. I just wanted some coffee to keep me awake before I went back to Moulsecoomb.

I saw Alien at ABC and was scared witless.

I always used to like the look on the people's faces when we were queueing up for ET and they were queueing for "Lesbian Nympho Nurses" ahem I think it was called, in Cinema no 3. It was allways a gang of lads or shifty blokes in raincoats. Occasionally there would be a bloke with his girfriend who looked highly ashamed or a bit like Waynetta

No, the Classic/Curzon was in Western Rd with the Embassy.

The one in North Street was the Princes. which became the Jacey and then became the Brighton Film Theatre. Used to go see lots of foreign, arty, films there. It then became a Pizzaland :(

Sorry getting confused. The Classic was in Western Road and is now Waitrose. Saw an all-night film there.
The Brighton Film Theatre was in North street.

What other cinemas were there?

:salute:

Lewes' last cinema (in the Cliffe) closed down a few years before that.

The last film shown at the Cliffe cinema was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The poster was outside for years afterwards. We used to play in there when we were kids. It was eerie, but less so when we used to chuck stones at the old screen!

I used to queue for the school bus when I was 5 outside the Vogue cinema. The doorways sheltered us from the rain. The bus went up to my school St Josephs in Hollingdean.

I was gutted when they redeveloped the area. All that remains of the Cox's pill factory is the clock, which is now on the Sainsburys which stands on the site.
