I'm sure a local electrician will be on this thread to PLUG his services before long.

The lighting circuit is often a ring, so live neutral and earth come into the rose and then out to the next rose.

UNLESS THE FUSE IS PULLED, THE LIVE IS ALWAYS LIVE EVEN IF THE SWITCH IS TURNED OFF

At each rose, the live is then take down to a switch and back to the rose (often in a different colour cable!). This switched cable becomes the live for the light.

Earth (if required) and neutral are tapped off as normal

If that doesn't make sense then get a professional in.

cheers Uncle C but still confused as to where i put the wires into the new fitting . the 2 red wires are twisted around each other so id imagine they go into the live on the new fitting . then there are 2 bare wires (not brown ) twisted round each other , im thinking this is the earth . now ive got 2 black wires that went into the old light fitting but not together this is where im confused. do i twist them together and put them in the neutral or one in the neutral and one in the spare hole in the little plastic choc box thing? googles nothelping

Hi Danny Boy. Might be able to help you here. The two reds are both live, one is the live feed from another light, the other is the red which goes down to your switch so that one side of your switch is always live. The two blacks are one from the switch and the other is the neutral which goes back to the neutral side of the circuit. Therefore you need to find out which is the black wire from the switch so that you can connect that to the red or brown of your light fitting and the black wire of your flex to the other black wire which is the neutral. there should be a connection for for the earth wires as well. If not sure call an electrician. Don't quite know what the brown wire is.

Of course you are. What a stupid comment. What you can not do is add spurs to your ring main or do any work outside of your house WITHOUT having it checked by a qualified electrician.

Although many electricians don't like providing a Part P for work someone else has done.

its not brown its a bare wire. i didnt have my specs on ha ha.. so the 2 red go into the live part of the light , the 2 bare wires go to the earth . then its the 2 black . does one go into the neutral slot on the little plastic connector thing and one go into the spare slot with nothing opposite? on the old ceiling rose the 2 red were twisted together , the 2 bare wires were twisted together then the 2 black went in seperately to the old fashioned light bulb holder if that makes sense.

Firstly, lighting doesn't work on a ring circuit as someone here has posted. It's only power circuits.
There are a few ways how to wire lighting but the most common is loop-in
Anyway, what you'll probably see is red/brown going into the middle section of the lighting pendant, this is loop in method.
There may be another conductor in this 3pin connector, if there is, that'll lead onto next light,
From there, you get a live going to the switch, then from the switch to the load, I.e. Bulb. That is your switched line.
Then after the bulb is your neutral back.

electrician, The 3 reds stay together on their own. this is called a loop connection. the two blacks are your neutral in and out. put the blacks together with your blue (neutral). and then the brown with switched live on its own. (black with red/brown sleeving). green and yellow = earth. simples.

NO
one of them is neutral, the other will be a switched live from the switch.

listen to moggy :)
