And if so, are any of you on an insulin pump? I've just had funding approved to go on a pump, and am very excited about not having to do injections again, but I do feel a little nervous about being constantly connected to it! What if it goes wrong, etc?!

Any experience / advice, much appreciated

I'm type 2 but I do know lots of type 1's and they all inject as I do and of the maybe 6 I know 4 don't want to even try it.
personally I like to be in control myself if you do try it let me know how you get on.

I'm a type 1 diabetic but have no experience of the pump, although was offered the chance to go on one last year. Good luck with it.

My son is type 1 and has been using an injecting pen for a while before that he was using hypodermic needles which he had to use after being diagnosed at the age of 10.

From all accounts, they're brilliant and it actually gives you more control over the diabetes.

The Accu-Chek Combo system that I'm going on is programmed according to your carbohydrate intake, lifestyle etc, and is easily over-ridden, making it infinitely flexible, apparently. You bluetooth your blood sugar readings to the pump, and it 'injects' accordingly. If you eat more, you tell it to pump more insulin in to cover the carbs. Do more or a surprise amount of exercise, and it can be 'paused' or the dose reduced, so you can avoid hypos. I think it can 'inject' 0.1 of a unit, so it's more precise.

Strangely, though, after 27 of doing injections, it will be really weird!

Thanks. Have you been on / been offered a place on a DAFNE course? Really recommend it, if you get the chance. It gives you more control over the diabetes, rather than the other way round.

Been a type 1 for a while now (8 years). Have read lots about the pumps and have heard very good things about them. For some reason ive not been tempted by it. Would be extremely interested to hear how it goes though. Good luck and hope it improves your HBa1C!!

I would hate to have this disease.

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

i don't think you'll find it's a disease old chap.......more a condition where the pancreas fails to regulate the sugar content in ones blood, resulting in hyper or hypo glyciemic episodes.........

good luck guys......like miss-carriages and anti-depressants , you have no idea how many people are dealing with this sort of thing on a daily basis..all the best .....syd.

Alright - ive just come back from spending a long time in Asia where alot of guess work came into play. Last HBa1C was 8.7 so a long way to go. Everything else is exactly where it should be. Unfortunately i like eating too much!

35 years from the Rand Rocket to pens and back to disposables.Never been offered a pump, though.

Good luck to all those researchers looking for the alternative to the only current cure.

8.7's not too bad, mate, especially considering you've been away so long! I had a year travelling round south east Asia about 10 years ago, and it was very interesting medically, know what you mean!

See if you can go on a DAFNE course (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) DAFNE Home - really useful for guesstimating carb content in food, and a bit liberating, really! Good luck!

You had one of these?!

I started off on glass syringes, too, but only for a while. Disposables were a breathe of fresh air, now the pens. The pump will be interesting :)

Im not sure - it must of been slightly more expensive. I always have to fill out a medical 'questionnaire'. Thinking about it im certain me and the other half were roughly the same.

Nutri scales (Lloyds pharmacy) are grand. They count your carbs for you.
