All this Rooney rubbish

Owen isnt world class in my eyes, can think of quite a few people that are better than him. However, anyone that would rather pick Crouch is a bit mental.

What has Owen done in the last 3 Seasons? Not an awful lot he was poor in Euro 04. As indifferent as Crouch is at least he looks some sort of threat whereas Owen does not.

8 goals in 18 competitive matches of which he certainly missed a couple. Shit really.

At the foot of the downs
Wayne Rooney has been passed fit to play for England against Trinidad and Tobago by independent medical advisers.

Professors Angus Wallace and Chris Moran of the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham flew to Germany on Wednesday to examine the 20-year-old.

The Manchester United striker has not played since breaking a metatarsal against Chelsea on 29 April.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said on Wednesday that Rooney was match fit for the Group B game on Thursday.

Professor Wallace is understood to have examined Rooney, held talks with England's medical staff and also studied videos of the striker in training before holding final discussions with Eriksson.

NOW Sven, please be carefull with him !!!

He's a proven goalscorer at every level, his career scoring rate is about 1 in 2. That makes him world calss in my eyes.

Rooney passed FIT by independent expert

"Wayne's recovery has been more rapid than expected over the past week.

"This is due to the excellent care he has received since suffering the injury to his foot and because Wayne has worked so hard at his recovery.

"Due to this, we were invited back earlier than anticipated to reassess Wayne by Dr Leif Sward, the England team doctor.

"We are independent experts and would like to make clear that the findings of our evaluation and decision have been made without any pressure from the Football Association.

"We have Wayne's best interests at heart, as our sole concern is Wayne's well-being - now and in the future."

"We have carried out a full risk assessment related to returning him to play at this stage.

"That assessment has indicated that he is at no more risk than any other player who has recovered from an injury and is returning to competitive sport.

"It is our professional medical opinion that Wayne Rooney is now available to play in the World Cup."

He was in the right place when it mattered against the Argies, OK it was a friendly but you tell me it wasnt an important match

And you tell me who changed that game when he came on the pitch.

I think Owen is very good, but not world class. I think the following, off the top of my head, are all better than him

Henry
Shevchenko
Van Nistelrooy
Rooney
Eto'o
Ronaldo (admittedly not on recent form)
Crespo

You could even make a case for others. I think if he had his pace of old, he would be world class though, I admit that.

Yup, the Argies had it in the bag before Riquelme was substituted, we were more worried about conceding another goal, rather than equalising, the way he was releasing their forwards with sublime balls. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves imo.

Fair enough, but unfortunately I don't think any of those qualify for England! Owen is far and away the best goalscorer we have, so he has to play. Even half fit he's still mile better than Defoe/Bent etc.

You wont find me disagreeing with that. There is no way he shouldnt start for England.

Sorry but how many of these have been stars of the world cup from their one matches each so far. You can only have this argument in three weeks time

Prior to the World Cup :

Henry.........................31 goals in 76 games 0.41 per game
Shevchenko.................27 goals in 63 games 0.43 per game
Van Nistelrooy.............25 goals in 49 games 0.51 per game
Rooney......................11 goals in 29 games 0.38 per game
Eto'o.........................14 goals in 47 games 0.30 per game
Ronaldo.....................61 goals in 97 games 0.63 per game
Crespo......................28 goals in 56 games 0.5 per game

Owen........................35 goals in 75 games 0.47 per game

The facts make him at least the equal of these superstars therefore he is a World Class goalscorer.

Fair enough I admit I am very wrong about Owen. Still he really isn't on any form at all.

Well found.

His record stands up against anyone, I agree partially with enigma that you can argue that some of those are better/worse but Owen is still a first class goalscorer.

That doesnt take into account club games though, which is slightly unfair.

I agree that Owen is a very good player, no doubt about it, but I think those players I mentioned are better. Thats not having a pop at him. I dont support England anyway.

I'm not just talking about the World Cup though, that would be ridiculous. Its far too early to judge in the World Cup, and also it would be unfair on Owen, having only recently regained fitness.

What risk?

His injury is supposedly fully healed. It'll be just the same "risk" as playing any player in any game.

The only question is his match fitness, the only way to get match fit is to play matches.

Don't see the problem myslef, give him 20 minutes at the end.

i agree

Rooney should definately not play today, and possibly not even against Sweden. As some pundit said yesterday, T&T can be a physical side and there is no point risking Rooney in such a game.
