Not sure what's worse, the free kick or the defending. L1 at best.

Yeah agreed, but AJ was sharp and buried it.
His experience in the PL with us, will have made him a better player and he was pretty good for that level before he joined us.
Nothing but good wishes for the fella. Model pro, who only wanted to test himself at the top level and gave his all in that pursuit.

I wonder whether we had any add ons from the deal?
If it was goals/appearances, we could yet do quite well from him.

Didn’t he get 17 starts on the spin under Hughton without a goal or an assist?

His longest run of PL starts under Hughton was 4 games (West Ham (h), Newcastle (a), Wolves (h), Everton (a)) before he missed 13 games in a row due to injury and a call up to play for Iran in the Asian Cup, he then had another 4 game spell starting towards the end of the season (Huddersfield (h), Palace (a), Southampton (h), Chelsea (a)).

Under Potter he never started 2 consecutive PL games until the very end of last season when he started the last 4 games of the season.

that second goal was a great finish. that extra second to compose oneself . . . such a shame it never clicked for him in blue and white stripes

No big deal, this is his level. Better to play, score, enjoy, be a hero than be perma-benched, not play, be frustrated etc (does xx million rather than x million really compensate?). It's a shame we blew a good load on him though.

Yes, reports are that there are add-ons (based upon AJ's and Feyenoord's performance).

Deffo- his level - never ever Prem

Let's just keep telling ourselves the Dutch League is sh1t, Dutch teams are sh1t, Dutche defending is sh1t and he should have had a season in the Championship. Hate to think we just didn't bother with our record signing at the time and let a goalscoring gem go for a pittance while bawling out the club for not finding a goal scoring gem.

If there was any reasonable chance that he was Premier League standard, a PL club would have come in for him as we were letting him go for peanuts. None did which confirms that he is now in his proper place. He worked in the PL for two good coaches so there should be no excuses for him.

We're not telling ourselves anything. The Dutch league is on a par with Scotch Monkey Tennis. Ali looks good out there because he gets the time and space he needs.

I don't see too many excuses tbh.

I think we all recognise that he needs more time and space than you get in the Premier league.

I would say he had one of the (if not the) best shots in our squad.
He just rarely had enough time and space to use it.

In a European league, where he will have a bit more space, he will do really well.
