Listening to the brand new Michael Kiwanuka album 'Love & Hate' and it's just the kind of music for the current mood. This track in particular has a glorious 5 minute guitar intro before some lovely soulful singing. If he's the future of British soul music then we're in very, very safe hands. It's a quite brilliant album.

Nice as F**k - 'Nice as F#*k'

(I've asterisked out the first swear word, the second is the actual name of the album)

This is a Jenny Lewis side project with Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster and the Like’s Tennessee Thomas (I'm not familiar with either band) but rather than some of her other projects which have veered into American/Country this is a beautifully simple New Wave sounding album. The whole album has an innocent charm to it and if anything it's under-produced/mixed to give it a very authentic late 70s feel. Kudos goes to whoever is the drummer on this album, love it.

A few more albums I've been listening to.

Pascal Pinon - 'Sundur'
Icelandic minimalist-folk duo and sisters, Jófríður and Ásthildur Ákadóttir haven't recorded together for the last 3 years but there's a new album, Sundur, due out in August. Sadly, this track '53' is the only track available for streaming so far but especially recommend 'Forest'. Big Bjork-influences but also Soley, Olof Arnalds and Emiliana Torrini.

Fufanu - 'A Few More Days To Go'
Another Icelandic band but there's not much twee folk music here. It's post-punk/new wave/Goth with heavy guitars and synths. The influences, to my ears are New Order, Interpol and Gary Numan. You can probably chuck Bauhaus into the mix too. I managed to blag a copy of the deluxe edition which contains remixes from the likes of Damon Albarn and Nick Zinner.

Vince Clarke/Paul Hartnoll - '2Square'
Orbital's Paul Hartnoll teams up with Vince Clarke for a strictly no-frills dance album. It starts off with very much an electro sound but later on in the album it gets more techno sounding. I must admit, it's not really doing it for me - the electro/techno mix sounds a bit messy and I'm not convinced there's a really big tune on the album. This track in particular just makes me think of that 90s novelty record 'Doop' which is very unfortunate.

An album I haven't enjoyed was Bright Light Bright Light - 'Choreography'. I hated it. Sounds like early noughties Elton John trying to do electro-pop. Worse than that, he sounds like Gary Barlow trying to do electro-pop.

I saw them for the only time about 10 years ago, they supported Grinderman at the Kentish Town Forum. They were gloriously shambolic and looked like the Pet Shop Boys after 20 years of Crystal Meths.

Excellent, that brings back memories! And Seasick Steve was on before Suicide.

That jamming they did at the end was horrendous in a good way. I get the feeling they were all a bit worse the wear for drink.

My mate/boss picked this up on Monday. Between us it's been played at least half a dozen times this week and everytime one of the punters has asked what it is (in a good way). An excellent album.

I saw them at Crawley. It was absolute mayhem, they were attacked on stage by a bunch of skins and forced off (I believe Vega had his nose broken).

Skins were wondering around the audience, picking on people at random and kicking seven shades out of them. By far the most violent gig I've ever been to - happy to get out of there in one piece (but then, I think that most times I visit Crawley)

Tusks - 'False EP'
Emily Underhill aka Tusks is signed to the brilliant One Little Indian label and this is her second EP to date. It starts very mellow and stays there but the place it occupies is quite beautiful too. It has a wonderful 'morning after the night before' feel to it, sort of The XX without the synths. Highly recommended.
