Why can such bureaucracies NEVER admit fault. It's always 'as a token of good will', 'the benefit of doubt in this instance' etc.

But well played MG, pleased for you and well done for contesting as I really don't think I would have. I've a tendency for just taking and remunerating at the injustice of the situation.

So what he's saying is that if their system fails occasionally they won't penalise you, but if their system fails every week you will have to pay loads of penalties. I somehow don't see that standing up in court.

I don’t think I’d be able to stop myself sending a similarly sanctimonious reply (after getting the fine revoked of course). “On this occasion as a gesture of goodwill I am prepared to overlook the distress and administrative burden caused by the failure of your systems to return the correct ticket as purchased. However, a second offence within 12 months will result in legal action”. Get the CEO email and cc him too.

I don’t take kindly to having my time wasted by things like this 😂

Well played. After my own documented run-in with Southern, absolutely do not back down. They are cowards and will lie and sit behind layers of bureaucracy and hope you back down. Never back down with these people.

Good for you and I’m glad justice was done in the end.

And, as ever, F**K SOUTHERN RAIL.

Had this issue when my daughter was at school and forgot her rail ticket, a penalty fare imposed which she was unable to pay and so they wrote to me to pay.

I obviously appealed which was a farcical waste of time, so I contacted my MP at the time, Stephen LLoyd and the matter was resolved with an apology. As ridiculous as it is I would go straight to your MP, lay out facts clearly and await your apology. To note at no point did I pay the fine.

Good luck.
Can I just add Stephen Lloyd was an absolute credit to his profession and one of the finest MPs in my lifetime. A brilliant man who did a sterling job for Eastbourne.

That's not good enough - I would definitely escalate further. This suggests if it happens again twice, she would be in trouble.

I would complain both about the tone and content of the above.
Same. I'd consider that if it happens again I'd want everything on file to show I'd not accepted their justifications and explanations, including a response to this letter pointing out that it was them at fault, not me.

I have had a few occasions when I hosted him at our school and he is a lovely man. I vowed I'd never vote liberal after the shenanigans with Lewes and the Amex, but he made that a difficult decision purely on a local level.
Stephen did more for the local community than anyone I can think of. His campaign literally saved the DGH
