So we play with 10 men for 25% of the season because the others do it, but can't do it back.
Naive not to think Poyet will have encouraged making the most of these situations.

Sadly, that's football for you - you have to react these days to get players sent off.

It's a problem much bigger than El-Abd.

We want players to somehow represent us, to act heroically like we would if we had the talent or determination. I didn't see the game yesterday, but i have no time for any Brighton player play-acting for dramatic effect. If i did that down the park i would rightly be laughed at and people wouldn't want to pass to me any more.
Winning at all costs is never approvable if it involves direct cheating or whacking over players about. Respect and admiration and envy from the common man aren't earnt that way, and i want to feel those things for our players.

Ashley Barnes also, falling over (although it looked more like he just sat down of his own accord) and catching the ball, thus the ref awarding handball against him and costing us a good attacking chance, who knows, we could have made it 1-1 from that attack?...

I don't want my team to be full of DIRTY CHEATS, why do we have to lower ourselves to others standards?...

Did not go to the game , but you see it every week in one game or another, im not condoning it but it has become a part of the game worldwide, its cheating yes, its trying to gain a edge over the opponent by all means possible, and in a high percentage of instances the ref falls for it and a player is sent off unjustly.

I do not believe for 1 minute any manager in any league has not spoke to his players about the pros and cons of taking a dive, its bollox and a ugly side of the game but its here to stay until the players themselves decide to stop cheating.

This is a good point just because everone does it that makes it ok?
So if everyone steals money off their friend does that mean its ok for you to do it to?
I didn't see yesturdays game but if he was cheating as badly as people are saying then I would be pleased to see him booked for it-he might think twice about doing it again then.

Not el abds fault, its the game now.
If he had got mellor sent off and we didnt lose as a result. Not many of us would grumble.
To use words such as disgrace about out own players for something like that winds me up.
Go and support arsenal and boo your own individual players like they do/did. Mug.

Wasn't at Northampton, only seen the highlights. What Sparrow did was stupid.Red card not sure but we didn't appeal against it

Greers one was stupid too, it was a red in my opinion. Elding obviously milked it. Cheating, yeah it probably was, but not in El Abds league.

By the way, I think El Abd is playing well and on form alone should be starting at centre back

But his cheating antics make me really not like him, he should be made an example of...

Sorry fella, but I must disagree..

An interesting blog on the "origins" of cheating I read a while ago would make a great insert!

Basically, the point was that cheating in the form of diving/play-acting/exaggerating only arises due to the player making sure the referee spots the incident.

Here, El-Abd was pushed- unless you disagree? So regardless of whether he hits the floor or not, the offending player has already cheated. However, if El-Abd stays on his feet, less is likely to be done about it (such is the unfortunate human nature of referees). So if El-Abd falls over, there is more chance of their player being sent off. Which I am more than happy with, because I am a win at all costs person and too many teams and players have done it to us.

This is all assuming that El-Abd didn't actually lose his balance, although I know he did roll around.

End point, move on. It happens in the game and I think a bit more guile and craftiness is what this side needs.

Boring Boring Boring...if it had been one of our players whether the opposition dived or not we would have been down to 10 men...Their player raised both hands and pushed El Abd..Now that right or wrong that is a sending off offense as we well no..Mellor should have gone..El Abd puts his body on the line for the club and anyone doubting his loyalty or use at the club is a W*nker

Spot on, a top bloke who has been our best defender (even ahead of Calde and Painter so far for me) this season.

You know what.... I'm sick of NSC and its small number of moronic, vocal behind a keyboard, cliquey, glass half empty, slag off our own players at every opportunity, you don't know anything if you dont post 50 times a day idiots.
I am out.

I'd rather not cheat, even if it means losing. I like to think our club is better than that.

Is it cheating though? He was pushed with two hands. This is a red card offence. Is it wrong to go over and make the most of it to highlight the point to the referee? It is not like he is diving inside the penalty with no-one touching him.

Pretty sure pushing in the chest is a yellow card offence at best mate, when you go throat upwards it becomes a red. Which is why what El Abd was doing was trying to con the ref into sending Mellor off, thankfully the lino saw it and made sure it was just a yellow.

Stupid on Mellor's part regardless though.

Fair enough, I wasn't sure- does it not count as violent conduct? What's your opinion on it, if it was our player pushing one of yours, would you condone them playacting?

It was embarrassing. We were down the front and got a pretty clear view. More people were screaming at Mellor and I was screaming at El-Abd to get up.

It was truly embarrassing.

Personally I'd be embarrassed. Last season we had a dutch winger called Etienne Esajas, he only dived once for us, because he did it right infront of the Kop and it was so blatant half of the ground started shouting at him "GET UP YOU f***ing GIRL" and the like.

It's all relative really, I'd begrudgingly accept cheating to win if it was a playoff final or something, because you know damn well the other team would do it given the opportunity. Week in week out though? I think I'd rather be crap than get a reputation as cheats.
