I have a good mate who plays national league north. He is a centre back and has always played in 6.

A large spring roll.

Edit: Bugger! Beaten to it by @SeagullinExile

Instead, I'll go for: three behind a false nine.

Surely the correct answer is "it depends on the formation"?

I didn't grow up as a football follower, for me it's a more recent interest (from Gus Poyet era Brighton onwards) and shirt numbers don't mean a huge amount to me beyond the 9 and 10 roles. So for me, I'd look at it logically. If we looked at a basic 4-4-2 and assume that the GK is #1 at the top of the team sheet, then working down and left-to-right:

GK - 1

LB - 2
CB - 3
CB - 4
RB - 5

LW - 6
CM - 7
CM - 8
RW - 9

FW - 10
FW - 11

But that's clearly not how it was all set up back in the days when the shirt number did mean something, given the FW's are 9 and 10 and what everyone is saying so far about the 6 etc.

I wonder if Igor Julio will be given the number 6 shirt or whether Caicedo will move from 25. Otherwise I'm not sure who would be candidates for the shirt, maybe Ayari? Maybe Gilmour but I can't see it.

Neither here nor there
When I first became aware of these things Alan Hansen at Liverpool was a number 6 and he was very definitely a centre back. So there you go.

If you're discussing football and a Number 6 is mentioned, it's fairly certain a deep-lying centre mid is the player in mind.

The number on a player's back is often meaningless these days.

Can’t vote as it doesn’t give me the option to choose both!

Kit number wise - 4 is a CM and 5 and 6 are centre backs.

BUT when talking about positions, 6 is a holding mid.

Not confusing at all!
Exactly this. Your centre backs should wear 5 and 6, but nobody ever REFERRED to a centre as 'a six'.
