A strange thing, in the non league game, central defenders will normally always wear 4 an d 5. In the Football League though it was 5 and 6.

Not that anyone asked but I’ve always viewed it as.

GK: 1
RB: 2
CB: 5
CB: 6
LB: 3
RM: 7
CM: 4 (More Defensive)
CM: 8 (More Attacking)
LM: 11
ST: 9 (Big Man)
ST: 10 (Little Man)

This is a debate I’ve had many times. Remember having a long debate with the Dutch exchange student at college who insisted that 6 was a CM and 4 a CB so will also accept that.

Right answer. Only minor alteration is the number 10 is the one who scored the most goals between him and the number 9. It could be a big man.

6 was a central defender. These days the number is owned by a player. If it wasn’t then the likes of Pascal would have to change his shirt several times a game. It’s nostalgic to recall a time when players knew which shirt they were competing for and as fans we could recite our 1 to 11. However the game has moved on.
