Oh for fucks sake. Politics is war, war is politics, they are the same thing. No war has ever been faught without politicians of both "sides" benefiting. Who knows when we are goingto be attacked? I do. Never.

And by the way this defense force that is trained and ready to defend us is over in the Middle East, enforcing a police state and making sure that the Bush Family is making enough money out of peoples' misery and making sure oil money is safe while it tells everyone in the Western World that the threat comes from the Middle East and that britain is under threat.

We are not under threat. It is all bullshit. The War in the Middle East is a sham. It may not be the soldiers fault but it is a pretty good argument for not joining the army. That and returning home to a life of Gulf War Syndrome, PTSS, homelessness and shit after care.

We have had armed forces since William the Conqueror last invaded us. Nothing to do with current world affairs.

Btw Les, they aren't meant to be retorts.

We have had armed forces for a lot longer than that. What has that got to do with anything? The armed forces have everything to do with current affairs. You are not making any sense.

Much as I agree with your general thread, it does not take away the fact that the individuals in the Marines are well trained, bloody good at what they do and get my respect. As an ex serviceman it pains me to see the crap our force now take for the advancement of a corrupt American consortium and their cronies. But it better to have a well trained military than the growing number of private armies being created by the US who anser to no one but the dollar.

We're obviously talking at crossed purposes.

You may be interested to know that out of the 160 or so applicants to join the SAS this year NOT ONE matched the standard. For the first year ever all applicants were rejected.

Worrying! Are we becoming a nation of softies these days?

Agreed. I actually have nothing against the Armed Forces. I just feel sorry for them as I think they are dedicating (and losing) their lives to something that is a massive lie and getting no credit or recognition for their efforts and coming back from theatres of War with many, many phsycological problems that their training has taught them to ignore. All under the banner of defending "a great nation".

Unfit more than softies. Not one of them was able to complete the full testing program and pass it. Many of them apparently failed on fitness, overweight and out of condition. And bear in mind, these are people who are already in the forces.

Maybe it will be a bit of an eye opener for the forces in general and make them realise that standards are obviously dropping. It does'nt fill you with much confidence to know that your armed forces are becoming overweight and out of condition.

It doesn't fill me with confidence to lnow that The army deliberatly recruit from poorly performing schools and underprivilidged areas because they know the kids are open to suggestion and perfect cannon fodder.

It's allways been the way though Nibble, Loads of kids have allways joined the armed forces because they come from a poor background and a poor education and it was the only career they could get.

Recruitment for the armed forces must be very difficult these days nibble given there's a real chance you might have to actually go and fight in a real war somewhere. I'm affraid needs must and obviously they will target the youngsters they feel they have more chance of attracting.

Thats a pretty unfair thing to say though Nibble - if we didn't have any armed forces full stop we'd all be moaning and groaning....recruiting is a fairly tough business and like all employment there is a certain target audience...

Who should they be targeting then is the question?
