Probably the same scout that advised us to pick McArthy over Roy Keane for the same reasons.

No Roy Keane came over here with Paul McCarthy but got homesick and wanted to go back to Ireland and it was a few years before he was picked up again by Forest. That one cannot belayed at the clubs door. We got fairly good service and use out of Paul McCarthy before he went to Wycombe, he just struggled to command a first team spot and subsequently moved on to get first team football.

I think Forster deserves another year. He's proved he's still a threat at this level. 2 years would be risky. I can't see that being given myself.
With no-one commanding the no.1 shirt from Kuipers, I can't see him not being here next season.

I can't believe previous posters saying El-Abd should go. If anyone in that list deserves a new contract, it's him. We're not in a position where we can get rid of a decentcover player. OK, granted that he's not the best, but the effort and commitment he gives, he deserves better than to be tossed aside. Gus was right when he singled him out for praise. I'm not saying he's a first teamer, but he deserves a contract, and I'll be shocked if he doesn't get one.

Yeah El Abd deserves to stay. More a sign our team has been gash that he has been so good though. Bit of a Crumplin scenario where the shit becomes good the worse we get

Forster, Kuipers and El-Abd to be offered new deals (not saying that they'll all accept)

Hart, McLeod, Hawkins and Livermore to be told where to go.

Cox and Virgo have between now and the end of the season to prove themselves worthy of a deal (unless they get shipped out in the january window of course).

I agree completely, but I wouldn't 'tell them where to go', I'd let them leave with our best wishes.

Yes he was turned down but remember he was very young and you cannot sign every boy who comes for a trial. He was spotted and signed by Palace playing for Greenwich Borough again some time, a couple of years, after we turned him down.

Abort, retry, fail
I thought we were going to take Keane on trial, on advice from McCarthy, but phoned Keane up the night before and cancelled it.

I would give deals to Cox, Kuipers, Forster and possibly Virgo (if he can prove his worth).

absolutely, we cant sign everone and that is why the club pays managers, coahes and talent scouts. We had first dibs on Roy Keane and Ian Wright, instead they signed up Geoff Cooper and John Crumplin. There we go, but how things might have been different :shrug:

Yep. I'd say roughly the same about Cox too (not the commitment, just that he's a useful cover player). Depends how much we're paying. Would offer Virgo a new contract but at much lower wages - I remember the papers reporting that he was our highest paid player after the Man City game last year; clearly with the way he's played since that game that is a ridiculous situation.

You have a very blinkered view of the Albion don't you. Don't recall Ian Wright not being taken on because he was too small, it was because we didn't think he was good enough. Strange how he wasn't snapped up by anyone else at the time. He went into non-league football and would appear to have worked hard at his game and was eventually picked up by Palace when he was 22! We had seem him as a teenager.

We have signed some very good youngsters and non-league players that have served us well. Seem to recall we signed Peter Ward from a non-league club! Also, the likes of Nicky Bisset, Robert Codner etc. We have, according to some reports, some talented youngsters on our books, eg Caskey and Strong. But as you say, we can't sign everyone!!!

thats a bit harsh, no mate, i just judge as Im judged at work - on results. Telling Ian Wright he was not good enough and having first dibs on Roy Keane are two howlers. I was told it was because Wright was too small, but if they thought he just wasnt good enough then that is just as bad. With respect to Robert Codner, John Crumplin and Geoff Cooper they are two bloody great big howlers and managers, coaches and talent scouts are required, not asked, required to get things right at work, or we should find someone who will. Sorry but its a hard world and thats the way it is.
