I think it’s been confirmed now that none of the Chelsea stuff matters now in terms of where we finish.

By who or what?
According to MotD last night, if Chelsea win the Conference League and finish out of the top six, then the team finishing in eighth goes in to the Europa League (provided Palace don't win the FA Cup).
What's changed since then beyond today's results which, if anything, makes the above scenario more likely?

This could still play in our favour. They will either still be celebrating/hangover/on the beach or they will be as down as hell.

And Spurs are terrible this season anyway.

Beat Liverpool (not impossible given their season finished weeks ago) and we must surely have a strong chance of finishing 8th.

Only if Brentford drop points in their last 2 games. If they don't it matters not if we win our last 2, barring a massive GD difference in our favour.

No.

Domestic football only gets 2 places in the Europa League. One from the Premier League and one from domestic cup.

Usually it’s 5th place in EPL but the extra UEFA CL place this year means it bounces down to 6th (or rather 7th because Newcastle‘s UEFA CL/Europa place (if they finish in top 6) bounces down by virtue of their Carabao Cup win)

The other Europa League place will go to either CP or Citeh as winners of the FA Cup.

The Premier League only has ONE place in the Conference League and one place for winners of the Carabao cup (this year Newcastle whose Premier League UEFA qualification bounces down a place which means 8th place is up for grabs)

If Chelsea win the Conference League, they get Europa next season but that Europa place doesn’t bounce down if they also finish in the top 6 of the Premier League - only the domestic trophy won places bounce down if a team has already qualified through the Premier League.

Furthermore: This means if Palace win the FA Cup then they take one of the two Europa spots, and Conference spot moves up to 7th because they haven’t already qualified through the Premier League so we have to hope Citeh win the FA Cup and their Premier League qualification place bounces down NOT Palace if we want that 8th place Conference spot.

If I’ve understood things correctly, there appears to be a difference in UEFAs rules for this particular scenario.

That means should Chelsea win the Conference League, finish 6th or 7th (and City win the FA Cup) then 8th would get Europa League and the PL would have no representation in next seasons Conference.

whilst riding in today I saw a run over seagull, head flattened. I take this as an omen that we get 6 points but palace wins. ... or that Brighton fans heads explode with joy as we get 1 point, Brentford and Bournemouth get 0 and we get into Europe ahead of Fulham on goals scored, as palace get eviscerated by city. ... or perhaps it means that that seagull was not as fast as it thought it was.

Again, the UEL place makes a jump and goes to seventh. The Premier League would have three teams in the UEL and nine in Europe.

Previously I would have agreed with what you are saying as that’s how I understood it to work. But that isn’t what the BBC imply in this article and it has thrown a massive spanner in a lot of people’s understanding of how it’s done (a let’s face it UEFA do like to confuse things).

That implies that if Chelsea don’t finish top 5 but win the Conference League and City win the FA Cup then we’d have 3 teams in the Europa League and none in the Conference League. The three teams would be Chelsea (as Confernce winners) whoever finished 6 or 7th (that isn’t Chelsea. That team would take the spot allocated to the highest finisher in the league that hasn’t already qualified) and 8th (who would be the next best team taking the FA Cup spot).

Assuming the BBC are correct there does seem to be an inconsistency regarding Conference winners that doesn’t seem to apply to the Champions League or Europa League winners if they finish in certain positions.

Brentford suddenly in pole position and favourites on paper - that brings a pressure they’ve not experienced yet. Wolves and Forest would both have expected to win this weekend. Football is a funny old game.
