Rain tomorrow and or Tuesday should see us safe for a draw. I think us possibly winning has gone out of the window, so we can only play for a draw.

Two evenly matched sides which is a worry as Australia are on the way and they have two fast bowlers who bowl 92-95 mph. That makes cricket a different game, as does a spinner who can turn it. Replace Bell with Pieterson and we would be more competitive in the Ashes but even then our bowling isn't up to it and we must worry how our batsman will do when a decent bowling attack comes steaming in at them.

This one's not looking good is it?
Going into the series with no coach and off the back of a terrible of a terrible capitulation in Barbados, we would have taken a drawn series against as good a New Zealand outfit as I've seen. It's important now for England not to fold, losing wouldn't be the end of the world in terms of the Ashes, losing badly would dent our confidence.
We may have solved a couple of issues in this series as well. Lyth, could be exposed by the Aussies but he looks like the best option to open we have come up with since Strauss' retirement. Wood, isn't the finished article but I like a lot about him, a repeatable, economic action, a good brain and the ability to get it up to 90mph+, he's got variation when the track is flat as well. Both Anderson and Broad are bowling well which they are going to need to do if we are going to get close to Australia. Cook looks in the best order for some time. The middle order remains strong and I would back Bell to get himself out of his current run.
It looks like we are going into the Ashes without a spinner who can at least hold up an end. Ashley Giles wasn't the most important member of that 2005 Ashes winning side but Vaughan was always greatful to be able to toss the ball to a spinner who very rarely went for more than 3 an over. The only other option now is to go back to Treadwell which demonstrates the paucity of options, we can't throw Rashid into an Ashes debut (can we?)
Definitely feeling better about the summer after this series, whatever happens in the next couple of days.

FFS He is called Pietersen and I have more chance of getting into the England Middle Order than he does.

As has been mentioned already, the way New Zealand have been able to push the game forward with their positive batting doesn't bode well for the Ashes.
Australia will exploit any weakness in the bowling attack, probably even more effectively than NZ have. Moeen Ali will get hit out of the attack as soon as he comes on to bowl, and the inconsistent length our pace bowlers have been bowling will get punished just as NZ have. We don't have the depth of really pacey bowlers like the Aussies do to bully teams into submission, but their duo of Johnson and Stark will expose all the old weaknesses again. I can't see Stuart Broad scoring a 40+ score in the Ashes, as they will know exactly how to attack him, short pitched balls, 90+ mph.
So, the Aussies will score quickly, racking up the runs in a similar fashion to NZ, almost removing the value of the 2nd new ball, and they have a very balanced bowling attack.
It's going to be a very testing series for England.

What spinner have the Aussies unearthed that can spin it then?
Lyon is a decent containment bowler, but not even in the class of say Swann, who could win matches.
Fawad Ahmed, perhaps? We will find out a little more about him in Dominica from Wednesday on.

It's a shame we never took the chance to get Rashid in the team at some point - he's the best spinner in the country and can score runs - as proven over the weekend, getting a ton for Yorkshire.

Agreed that Rashid should have got a game in the Windies.
In the past when I have seen him at Hove, he has leaked runs, which is a worry.
I do think the ECB are hoping that Riley kicks on, but he is still so inexperienced that could be a while yet.
