How many of our rivals only have 23 players in their squads? (And every PL squad will have youngsters on the fringe so we can push that aside as reasoning)

I don't agree with your comment at all. Just because you CAN name up to 25, doesn't mean you should. We named 23 in February.

We have named 24 (which includes Crofts): just taking a quick look, Bournemouth have named 23, as have Villa, Norwich only 22, and Burnley and Saints 24.

Arsenal only named 20, and Chelsea 19.

I don't think they have to be named. However you cannot sign a free agent to fill a gap in the 25 man squad if you've got players not named in the squad who are over 25.

So basically we have nothing to lose by naming Crofts as he is taking up what would have always been an empty squad slot if we hadn't named him.
