2 minute silence today at 11am

I hope we are all going to take these 2 minutes and think about the men who died to save us.

On the news today, they have found many bodies in the old trenches in Antwerp, covered up when they were blasted. It just goes to show that many years on, we still find more bodies out there who went missing in action.

I also hope that at 11am people on here will not be posting (but you cannot press your thoughts onto other people).

BTW 7am starts are killers!

Armistice Day is 11th Nov as posted above.

Because of work etc the actual services and parades are held on Remembrance Sunday (the nearest Sunday to the 11th)

First of all, I am not too sure about the rhetoric of 'died to save us' - it's very hard to think of any serviceman who has died for at least 200 years to save 'us' - to save our imperial ambitions, yes, but not 'us'.

And, BrightonBird, what about the women who died?

I tried last year at work. Only to get told to anser a phone. This year I'm on a late shift so 11.00 is easy.

What I could not belive last year was that being a nurse on a care of the elderly unit, most staff members, especally those under their late twenty's didn't have a clue.

One of the old chaps on the ward understood what I was attempting to do and then quietly explained to the nurse in question what some of us. Staff and patients alike. Were attempting to do.

It's not me you have to apologise to - it's your sex you have to apologise to!

As an ex-servicewoman I don't feel the need for an apology.

It was just an expression.

OK, let's be serious about the 'expression'.
You SHOULD be more careful - these things do matter. Language is how we understand (and realise) our world. It has effects - the consistent hiding from History of women has been enacted through such 'expressions'. Stop using them.

And as for the lives lost - I am being very serious about that. Our war dead of the last couple of centuries have been sacrificed for our imperial pretensions. I think that that is a serious matter, which is why I will not engage in the carnivalesque attempts to cover that up i.e. 2 mins silence, red poppy etc.

If you really want to treasure the memory of these men and women slaughtered for the ideological needs of the powerful, meditate on the politics of war, but don't get all sentimental and repeat dodgy rhetoric about 'us'.

Serious enough for you?

once again someone's political views butt in on someones simple post saying 'let's remember'.

You remember in your way and we'll remember in ours.
