BTW 7am starts are killers!

I'm sure there was a better way of wording that. But I'm not trying to start an argument here! Just thought it was kinda ironic. :)

Seriously now, yes, I'll be taking part. Some of us younger than late-twenties do know what it's all about, just unlucky I guess Dover.

Don't worry, It doesn't bother me. As I said, it was just kinda ironic!

Just a thought, should a 2 minute silence mean no posts on here between 11 and 11.02? :)

First of all, I am not too sure about the rhetoric of 'died to save us' - it's very hard to think of any serviceman who has died for at least 200 years to save 'us' - to save our imperial ambitions, yes, but not 'us'.

hmmm.

just out of interest, how old are you fatbadger?

Fat badger why can you not keep your politics out of this, it is about remembering the normal people involved who had no choice but to fight.

It was a terrible price to pay but for the most part they did it without complaint because they believed it was right and they were doing it for future generations freedom.

Whatever your politics surely you can see what rememberence day is about? Are you really so insensitive to human suffering and blind to human sacrifice for others you can not see it.

Some wars were fought for freedom, some for gain and encroachment on another's freedom. Innocents are always the ones to suffer in the midst of political aggressions, and we are all told "our side is right". However there is one going on that many are not sure of, and the peace-force that some signed up for has been manipulated to serve (rather cowardly and narrow-minded) zealots .

As many grieve for the dead, it might be poignant to turn and face the situation that sees some kids about to die.

Whether you see past wars as imperial chess or defence and freedom fighting - being destined to repeatedly murder or die is not what mankind was born for.
Rest your prayers for the dead, but also retain energy to speak out for the living.

I don't believe men fought in Iraq to make sure something deadly didn't happen. I SUSPECT men fight in Iraq because Saddam was about to lead the Arab World into financial alignment with the Euro instead of the US dollar. Not much to wonder why the French and Germans don't ally with the US ! Asking for their help was a red herring in the first place.
It's transparently obvious that Bush didn't have a strategy on ending the war or organising Iraq socially and politically - he just wanted Hussein deposed asap, and "weapons of mass destruction" is a catchy phrase that works for the masses.

Can we keep this debate for another thread?

Ok, so Raph took a slightly different approach to this comment, but I think we agree...

I'm in France at the moment and today is Armistice day and a National Holiday. They also have a Victory day (WW2) on 8 May.

Maybe we should do the same on at least one day?

It should be a day for remembering the proud elderly men woh annually polish their medals up and provided europe with the freedom it has to date. POLITICS has no existance in my books today!

what the f*** are you on about?!!!!!!!

so during the 2nd world war ,should we have stood by and done nothing whilst europe was being invaded by the germans?

do you think hitler would have really have left us alone once he had power in the rest of europe?

,you may argue there was imperial motives ,whith the fighting in Egypt, singapore etc, but even then, ask the natives and im sure they would have prefered to be under the british empire than a facshist sate!!!

millions died for our freedom.

are you a Nazi fatbadger?

Yorkie, SM, Raphael Meade etc. -

Are you really so naive as to believe that there is no politics in remembrance? Wake up, for God's sake.

Mr Popkins -

I am talking about why we have gone into the wars we have - I am not interested in post hoc justifications. Teleology is the worst kind of intellectual crime. So stop it.

And no, I'm not a Nazi, you fool - just a historian.

There is no politics in our remembrance. Maybe some people don't care about how the rest of the country remembers it, but let people here remember it how they want to, and put your politics elsewhere.

Fatbadger there is no politics in my remeberence for my two grandfathers and an uncle and the millions of others so piss off with your political shite.

Any other day i will happily wade in about my politcal beliefs but not today.

Observed by just a few at Brighton uni but observed.

As I said before, this thread was for rememberance. I realise people will have different opinions, but please do not post them on this thread as it is designed for our thoughts with the people we lost, not for slander.
