I am also classed as a furloughed worker, I had an in depth email yesterday and it set out what I can and cannot do in relation to working. It states that I can go and do work as a volunteer or take a temporary job with another company whilst on furlough leave. It's my responsibility to look in to the tax implications but I am to return to my main employer once our shops re-open.

We've been told we can work a temp job and it won't effect furlough payment. Just has tax implications. Normally my contract wouldn't allow it, these restrictions have been lifted by my employers. Lots of people work two jobs anyway, so no different with the rest of us.
 


Being able to furlough staff has been a lifeline for our company. It means we can plan and have a decent exit plan when things start to return to normal. Like other employers I had a number of questions. Some have already been answered on this thread but here are answers to some of the questions I had.

The furloughed wage is based on PAYE for February 2020
As has already been confirmed, you can dip in and dip out. The minimum period an employer can claim for a member of staff is 3 weeks.
If staff being furloughed have a variable salary then the average they earned in the last year can be used. This was a great relief for one of our commission based field sales chaps who had a terrible February.

I don’t understand the questions. What he earns is paid to him via his salary, as PAYE.

Anyone who earns commission and has is in employment EARN their SALARY and by default, as commission changes each month then their earning, salary, pay, wage or whatever you care to call it are variable.

I'm assuming he has a base salary, which is fixed. He then earns sales based commission on top which is variable. His total earnings are variable, but there is a fixed element in there, his salary. It is most likely only the salary element that is eligible for 80%, not the variable commission part.

That's how it is working out for the recruitment agency I work for anyway.

Its the average of the total pay check. This includes basic plus commission

The answer to the original question, (Can your employer ask you to work, whilst furloughed?) is No...

However, mine has just told me that they've checked legally, and that once furloughed (most likely by next week) it is okay for us to VOLUNTEER to do a little bit.

In our case I think this is entirely fair enough, tbh - for myself it will just involve checking the post, and doing some security checks at our empty premises a couple of times a week. Not a lot to ask, given my employer will still be paying a fair bit of my (full) salary.
