When did it become the fashion to buy presents for teachers at the end of the year?
We've just bought seven presents for teachers and classroom assistants for our two kids. I can't think what it must be like for parents who have four or five kids. We then do it all over again at Christmas...
Not seen any mentions of this but there's an intriguing game going on at Lord's - the first English test match not involving an England team for nearly 100 years.
Australia 253 all out and Pakistan 21-1 - by all accounts the wicket is doing something so there should be a result here
What's...
Haven't seen a thread on this but Michael Ballack's agent seems to think that the German team has been taken over by some sort of gay mafia

The only one I'm guilty of is the ogling women one - but that's just daft. Name me nation whose blokes don't ogle women when they're on holiday

Just noticed that MattBackHome has a Shakespeare quote as his sig. As Granny Weatherwax and I have Shakespearean quotes too - does it make him the most popular source for a signature. Or is there someone else? Bill Shankly (I'm sure someone has the life and death quote)? Bill Hicks?
Just...

I'm not calling for Capello to be sacked - it would be too expensive to get rid of him but I do think we should look at the salaries we pay coaches.
Here's a list of WC coaches' salaries (well, the top 20) and, as can be seen, there's no correlation between earnings and success; just three of...
...someone had to say it.
In this case, that someone is a columnist for El Pais, the Spanish newspaper
Culpa de Thatcher >> Dibuje maestro >> Blogs ELPAÍS.com
I must say that I have little regard for Thatcher but even I'd be pushed to lay any of the blame for yesterday's performance at her door.
Following on from the Hardest Groups thread, I thought I'd take Kalimantan Gull's suggestion of using the SPI data and see how the various teams performed.
The SPI calculated how each team would perform according to their ranking and the games they were playing. so I plotted these scores...
I thought I'd add up FIFA rankings of all teams in the groups to see which one was the toughest. I know it's a bit rough and ready but it's the only thing that we have - the lower the score, the tougher the group
So we have:
Group D 73
Group C 77
Group H 82
Group B 88
Group E 104
Group A 125...

I said I'd like to score a century in an Ashes test at Lord's. It got me thinking as to who had done it - a select group of 14 English players have scored a century against the Aussies.
I'll tell you that one was AG Steel, the other 13 are more...
A senior Lib Dem has said the "only deal in town" for his party would be with the Conservatives, according to the BBC.
Looks like it's going to a Con/LD alliance after all.
If I were Clegg, that's the one I'd go with.
This wasn't an election issue but this sort of thing is precisely why I want to see the back of the Labour government.

OK, the miracle's happened and we're in the Prem. What's more, a good fairy has come down and given you one wish but it's a choice.
Do you choose winning the FA Cup or do you choose fourth place in the Prem and a place in the CL?
I was compiling a list of country-named footballers to help me get to sleep last night.
I got a few but need to finish the team.

Zimbabwe have gone from 58-1 to 84 all out: a collapse of Sussex-like proportions.
BTW, Sussex's new signing Brendon McCullum needs just 13 runs to become the first batsman to score 1000 international 20/20 runs
