    Massive swing against Tories

I know it's only a council by-election but the leading opposition party really don't want to lose seats with a swing of more than 33% - that's not exactly a positive message. And as for Labour winning just 32 votes, that's shocking. Great boost for the Greens though

    Taj Foods in administration

Just heard that Taj Foods has gone into administration. Sad news for those who look for choice for food shopping. Guess that will leave another store for Tesco to move into.

Most often misspelled word on NSC?

Seeing the thread about the 'Oldham "role" call' got me thinking about what words are consistently misspelled on NSC. Role is an obvious one but there are also large numbers of "shoe-ins" and "baited" breaths. "Its" and "it's" are often confused but the ones above are virtually always misspelled.

    Charlie Gillett - RIP

Sad news for those of us who were regular listeners to his programmes on Capital and Radio London. I've bought a lot of music from listening to acts on his shows: second only to John Peel in the pantheon of British DJs. RIP Charlie...

    Down with the kids...

The helpful BBC has published a guide to school slang so we can understand the kids on the 5B... BBC News - Say what? A parents' guide to UK teenage slang It's interesting that they stress the regional variables but I there a lot of words that are interchangeable - bird for example. Love...

    Question from a games virgin

I know nothing about computer games, apart from my copy of the chess program Fritz, I've never played them but my kids are now making noises about getting one. So, here's my question to the experienced gamers of NSC - what format should I get for kids? What are the advantages of DSversus WII...

    Nice Tweet from Caroline Lucas

Just seen this on Twitter "Great meeting with Alan Sanders, Director of Albion in the Community - incredibly impressed by range of work they do in #Brighton & beyond" If she is going to be our next MP, it's good to know that she's not following the same anti-Albion agenda than some of her...

    That funny Aussie website again

An old NSC favourite, David Thorne again...I'm sure this won't be the last time he features on NSC either, it's the funniest website of them all. This time, he has the police in his sights "I wanted to be a policeman but I failed the IQ test when I turned up at the right building on time"...

Good Goldstone picture in the Observer

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jan/10/fa-cup-1963-freeze-abandonments From the winter of 1963. That was three seasons before I started going but I certainly remember games being played in the snow - they used to use and orange ball. I don't remember any players wearing gloves either...

    Harveys in Brighton

Anyone know of shops or supermarkets that stock bottles of Sussex's finest? I don't want to make a special journey to Lewes to buy some but now the Sussex shop has gone, I don't know where else I can some.

20 Dumbest questions on Yahoo Answers

This made me laugh at loud (from PC World, the magazine, not the store - although I suspect the store would have 20 dumb questions of its own). God bless the Internet. Where else can you assume a fake identity, pose the most inane question imaginable--like "Why can't I see my reflection in...

    Ashes back on TV

After a series that was followed by most people on the radio and the highlights programme, the Ashes test will be broadcast on terrestrial TV in future. That's great news - my kids, who are quite interested in cricket, will be able to follow top matches on TV for the first time. Edit: the link...

    RIP Louisa Mark

Just found out that Louisa Mark died a couple of weeks ago. It's a name that will mean nothing to most of you. Even the older generation of NSCers will be unaware of her - unless you were into reggae in the late 70s (and I think that's just 1066 Familyman and me on NSC) but she was a big name...
