Think that’s quite harsh overall, though I would be interested to see the breakdown of how many of his goals and assists have come when playing on the left vs right. Think it would likely be quite telling.
Finally on the scoresheet for us! Also don’t remember seeing many headers with such bend on like that - only one I can recall (which was an even more impressive header) was Vincelot vs Coventry in the early Amex days.
In fairness we did sign Akpom in the season we got promoted to the PL - how’s that for juxtaposition. Hilariously his wiki page also states he “helped Albion to promotion” (with his 0 goals in 10 games).
He has of course seemingly come good since, but we’ll ignore that bit.
Yep - vintage Solly March move. Subtle drop of the shoulder and he’s beyond the full back, without seeming to have done anything.
Helps that he was up against Targett, mind, who has no place being in a Newcastle team in 2025.
Yep, he judged that one to absolute perfection. It’s early days but already I’m struggling to see where any weaknesses lie that might prevent him from being a top quality midfielder even at this very high level. He seems remarkably well-rounded.
I think his age is somewhat key to it all, too - having begun playing professional football much later than we’re used to. He’s 28 in May meaning the size of contract a PL heavyweight would normally throw at our best players is likely to take him well into his 30s, with very likely no resale...
For me Baleba and Hinsh is the perfect blend of physicality and intelligent use of the ball/reading of the game (which Hinsh brings in spades). It does look like Gomez could offer a seriously dynamic option though regardless of who he’s partnering.
These are normally the big question marks we have over central midfielders stepping up from inferior leagues. Don’t think we have anything to be worried about on that front. Looks MORE than equipped for the rigours of the PL.
He would’ve only been 19ish when he scored 8 goals in a Bundesliga season for Hoffenheim. You can see why he’s commanded some big fees in his relatively short career to date.
Very, very high ceiling given the maturity he’s already showing.
Only conceded 2 goals in the 3 games he’s started since returning from injury. No surprise the numbers back up just how much more solid our defence is with him in it.
