It is nuts. Been there less than 2 years. Is he that amazing to demand 20 million?
Well when you consider his excellent track record and the riches and success he could bring that club by doing what he does and that most PL clubs wouldn’t even blink about spending £20m on an unproven player from a foreign league, I’d say that £20m for Ashworth is not a lot in the grand scheme of things.

So it will now be Man Utd fans being unable to understand what his role is and saying he was solely responsible for signing player x and y

Are the options essentially Man United pay £20m now, come to an agreement with Newcastle for a lower figure or they wait until Ashworth's contract expires? All the while, he's being paid full salary by Newcastle.

There are often things like no-compete clauses built into contracts, to protect companies/clubs (in this case) insider secrets, portfolios and processes. For example, in addition to compensation, it is very probable that he isn’t allowed to join a rival without the current employer agreeing it, or a certain amount of time passing. In this case to protect confidential information like transfer targets, contract negotiations, and so worth from being in conflict of interest.

Kind of like me playing football manager and moving clubs at the end of the season and selling the club I’m about to join all my best players/dropping ongoing transfer targets then signing them for my new club instead. In simplistic terms of course.

I would imagine lawyers and agents from all parties, Ashworth and both clubs, are working feverishly to come to a settlement. Which could take months.

The entitled Man U fans will demand/expect instant success from Ashworth, as they do from every player they sign. Can’t see them being happy to wait more than a few months!!

Won’t be anything near £20m imo.

Aren’t Newcastle now stuffed by FFP. So either he has not got everything sorted yet or he has not done a good job. This is why I don’t understand him being worth 20 million. How much of our success is down to him and how much to bloom?

They will agree a package, they’re just going through the usual posturing……….can see Newcastle making him wait until the summer though, just to be awkward.

Being vindictive about people walking out before a job is finished and with the amount of money the Saudis have I would be inclined to go for the full two years gardening leave, whatever it cost to keep lawyers stringing the negotiations out, if it were me

Yep. Letting him go before the summer wouldn’t be worth the £ compo given what he knows about Newcastle’s strategy and short term plans. I wonder if DA will have the Saudi police monitoring him during his G/L 😉

He's not necessarily 'worth' £20m, that's simply the cost of ending his contract early now without negotiation......... it's up to United to determine if he's 'worth' paying out that much for. Toon also trying to recoup some of the compo they had to pay to us

May be worth £20m to Toon (and others) to stop him going.

He'll move for a compromise number within a few months
