[Albion] De Zerbi quote

I disagree, the difference yesterday was we stopped even attempting to play him in. For instance I believe this is where Steele is preferred because he can ping a ball in a progressive way, Sanchez hit the ball towards a player but often at hip or head height that needs full control before moving it on. Colwell offers this as well whereas Webster doesn't have the vision or ability.

I, like many appreciate the reason of drawing in the press by standing on the ball at the back, the transition then needs to be precise and quick, it is very noticeable it's not the same with Sanchez and Webster in the team and we are more reliant on Dunk to do it. We mix it up far more with Steele and Colwell.
We also kept doing it when the players were mentally and physically shattered and went for 10 minute stretches of being our own worst enemy and giving the ball away and it got really tiring. Its OK to have a plan B in specific circumstances. For example Uniteds technocratic total voetball Dutch coach brought on a big bastard to blam long balls to towards the end and it helped them.

Thought he made some good subs/changes to counter us in the second half as well. Fred coming on helped them a lot.

Have only seen this from RDZ in one place, The Times, but it strikes a slightly concerning note. Nothing that isn’t obvious in some ways as we’d all love to see us build on what we’ve got, but a tiny hint of Gus and his glass ceiling too… I don’t think it was meant in such a self-serving way in this instance but have to hope that meeting goes well in June:

“Next year, when we finish this season, we have to speak with the club and I want to know their plan to understand if we can improve the squad or not because [we] arrived without a lot of important players,” he said. “We have to be stronger to fight to compete another year at this standard, this level of football, these performances and results.””
i agree with this quote 100% , we just don't have depth in the goal scoring department ,Undav showed yesterday he's a long way off, Danny is 35..?? so its down to Evan ....we need a big boy up front , you will laugh but it's the piece in the jigsaw and will keep others here ...we need a decent striker a propper , decent striker.

I think we just have to get used to the fact that plan B is adhere even more closely to plan A.

RDZ is not a pragmatist like ETH. He's much more ideologically driven. This has bought us the success we've enjoyed, but inevitably it will blow up in our faces sometimes and we'll have to take it on the chin

He could have been 4 foot 2 and that wouldn't have impacted the bungled touch which is in danger of defining Undav's time with us.

It's more about being able to exercise your skills in moments of the greatest pressure than it is size. In saying this I do take into account Undav's excellent penalty.

I don't ever criticise it normally but watching a physically and more importantly mentally exhausted Webster, Caicedo etc try and do those intricate passes late on in the second half and repeatedly pass them out of play was a bit much. So hard to do without a sharp mind as much as body.you could see their body language getting a bit desperate as each time they lost it they realised it would be another hard slog to get the ball back. I think all managers need some element of pragmatism in very particular circumstances. Interestingly enough in interviews he often says he doesn't want his players to be robots and we have seen different things e.g. mitoma against Bournemouth.

De zerbi is just stating the obvious.

He owes us at least one more season. He knew the set up before he joined so can't say hes suprised.

But I can see it from his perspective. If we lose Mac and caciedo, even if we bring in 5/6 new players next season we will probably be below what we have this season. So his stock will fall.

This summer he could have his pick of some of the best managerial jobs in the world. Who knows when that chance will come for him again.
De Zerbi has his teams playing an excellent brand of football. But he has achieved little so far that suggests a major European team would take the plunge on him- except, perhaps, an Italian one. His stock is rising, but he's not the sought after manager folk say he is. There is no evidence, for example, that he was on Tottenham's radar. It's just paper talk.

Our scouting and recruitment is becoming regarded as the best in the world. Let's not start moaning that we aren't able to recruit players to the same depth of strength as a club with turnover of close to £600m in the last accounts (compared to our £175m).

I'm sure we tried to bring first-team-ready players in in January, but as we showed Arsenal, that's often easier said than done. And last time we made a January panic buy, we ended up with Locadia costing us 15m plus 4 years of wages.

I'm sure we will see some interesting deals done in the summer, which will be RDZ's first proper transfer window.
And wether we like it ir not Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, City, United all have stadiums around 2x ours and much bigger global franchising money....we can't compete on those levels.

He was asked how confident he was that Brighton can be making the late rounds of cup competitions again, his answer was essentially that it depends on the strength of the squad next season. I don't see any drama here.

And imagine how those unused players feel today? Just two subs made because they're not good enough, essentially.
It was never the game to bring in one of the youngsters and I'm sure they all understand that. Promising as they all are, you need experienced players to come on in a cup semi at Wembley

That’s true but I suppose my only real complaint is that he doesn’t seem to be doing much in way of bringing these guys through in games he could give them experience in. The odd 10min sub here or there, or one match then out for 3 months isn’t going to do anything for their progression.

I think he is a sensational manager for us but I worry he maybe isn’t one to work well with the recruitment model.

Not sure I agree with that. Ferguson was brought in and is now a regular starter. Enciso is just starting to break through and will probably get more starts before the end of the season. Sarmiento would have if not injured. Buonanotte and Ayari are getting minutes. We can't have 4-5 youngsters starting and still expect to keep up with the best teams in the league.

Agree. Little bit of a strange accusation to throw at RDZ I thought.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
The substitution that needed to happen in extra time was to replace Undav, he cost us the game, or to be fairer not having an EPL quality striker on the pitch cost us the game.
He scored a good penalty in the shoot out.

Are there any of these young players in particular you think should be getting more game time?

More I guess that I think Ferguson wouldn’t have maybe got the chance without Welbeck getting injured, likewise really Enciso and Colwill. If they are waiting for injuries for a chance rather than being trusted to come in, they might wait a while
or it may not come.

I might be being unfair, maybe it’s more a case of you look at the bench and tbh, we have a lot of young players without significant minutes. I don’t really agree that Sarmiento, Buonanotte or Ayari are getting enough minutes to develop them much.

I do agree you can’t start them all and compete well in the league etc but I struggle a bit to see how the model will keep working if we have a lot of the youngsters not really playing I suppose.

Think you are being a bit unfair. With Ferguson, Enciso both starting games, Sarmiento featuring regularly, Buonanotte and Ayari both getting on as subs, one thing I don't think you can aim at us is that young players aren't getting enough of a chance. You have to remember we only see game days, much of their selection is what is happening on the training pitch. What Enciso is evidence enough of, that you if work hard, whether you are on for injury time, 10 mins or 30mins, if you make an impact in some way you get another chance. If Sarmiento wasn't injured, feel certain he would have been used yesterday. Rather than unfair, maybe it's just impatience. You want to see more of them to see for yourself if they are ready, but if it isn't quite happening for them in training, then understandable the management team are taking their time with some of them.

Yes, I think that’s fair, I am maybe more impatient but I get that it’s maybe too early for them just yet.
