Does he de-humanise people? I've never watched him. I thought he just took the piss and did edgy comedy?

No.

I watched a whole vid of his stage show once. He batters people over the head with the C word and related, and, er, that's about it.

If you've never seen him how can you defend him?

I've not seen the grand wizzard of the Klu Klux Klan but I wouldn't defend him.

Mind you, his billing alone might give me a clue which way to vote

(I worry about you a bit ).

disrespecting people by using the n and p words is dehumanising, like "gook", or whatever

In light of other issues elsewhere, I may have overreacted slightly on Monday morning so apologies to my 3 fellow NSC'ers and their respective Nom de plumes.

However my original sentiment has not wavered.

Regardless of whether you like the work of Roy Chubby Brown or not there is a serious question about censorship here?

What right do Sheffield City Council have to dictate what the local population can and can't watch?

Surely market forces will provide the answer?

If RCB doesn't sell enough tickets to break even you've got the answer, if however he almost fills the venue as he's done for over 30 years then that's the answer.

As it stands over 30,000 people have signed a petition against the decision.

How far will censorship go before we get to Orwellian levels?

Fun fact to finish with, Life of Brian was banned by Worthing Borough Council from the both the towns cinema's for blasphemy in 1979, 40 or years so later, Always Look On The Brightside of Life is one of the most popular tunes played at the Council owned Crematorium, so ultimately is it actually about the opinions of the people in power at a specific time, whether that's right or wrong?

It is NOT a serious question about censorship. Sheffield City Council have decided they don’t want to host something which loads of people would find offensive.
Other venues in Sheffield would be available if he is desperate to play that City…… but maybe they don’t want to book him. That might be market forces at work.
If I was a theatre owner, I would not book him in a million years, but that doesn’t mean I would want to stop other theatre owners from booking him.
And just to put that in context, my own personal taste would mean I wouldn’t ever want to book anything by Andrew Lloyd-Webber either?

I am defending the right of people who want to be entertained by an entertainer in a venue. If no laws are broken then all is good yeah?
I don't know whether to be touched or creeped out by your concern for me!

What if the venue doesn't want the entertainer in their establishment because he's a bit of a ****?

Quite. It's a case of not wanting him to starve but also not wanting him round my dinner table.

Fair enough, bit of a faux pas to book him and later cancel him though.
He's in his 70's now and has been doing his thing since the 60's.
It does make me wonder why book him in the first place?

The thing about RCB isn't that he doesn't really tell racist jokes....

.. he makes racist statements.

This came a bit later in his career, but he is very open about it. They laugh at the smut, they stand up and clap at the racism.

It's 90% blue comedy, 10% political rally. He didn't plan it like that (and wouldn't consider himself political) but he is what he is.

That's make him different from other "traditional" comedians like Manning and why venues have declined his bookings for years.

He took this path himself. His agent gave him the choice, try and break through onto TV in a very competitive market or turn yourself into the most offensive comedian ever.

You'll never be on TV, your choices of venue will be limited but you will have a career.

The modus operandi since the 80s > do a a few venues and release a DVD/VHS for Christmas.

He's made quite a living out it and you can easily find his accounts on Companies House.

Cancelled ? It's part of the business model.

He could do with losing a few pounds to be fair.

Both lb and £.

11 would be nice.

That's the weight of a human head.

Jobza goodun.

Most the people signing the petition will have never have seen him live and will never buy a ticket to do so. He often struggles to sell out venues as his live act is very niche.

Where he has made his money ( a comfortable few million ) is from DVD sales invariably bought as Christmas presents. The vast majority who have never seen him live either.

What you have done is pick up a relatively routine event (a venue deciding not to book him, it's been going on for years) and twist it into an "anti-woke" rant and a "sign of the times".

That in itself is nothing new. It's exactly the same strategy the tabloids took into the 1980s, making up stories about looney left councils to sell papers.

The difference (I think) is the tabloids didn't believe a word they wrote. In your defence, I think you do.

If you fancy a return to the media world and want to create debate around "political correctness/woke" I'd try and separate your personal beliefs from the subject of debate.
