I won two tickets in a newspaper competition many years ago. Not my thing so I gave them to my parents.

They walked out at the interval!

Was first prize one ticket?

I haven’t read the thread but I do wonder how these people would cope going to the pub for a few pints -

?? I cope quite well when I go to a pub…even after a few barrel aged dry-hopped India pale ales.

Yes, I was fully aware of Mr Manning's demise but thanks for the clarification.

One would have thought the lack of people clamouring to be the first to point the obvious out would have been a bigger enough clue but sometimes common sense is a gift not necessarily bestowed on all [emoji6]

he's pretty crude to be fair and does tell the run of the mill Pakistani jokes , par for the course for comedians from the north where many towns .........oh well never mind , i believe he was a ghost writer for League of Gentlemen from time to time .....i have never heard him use the N word.

Oh I see , might give him a miss then . . BTW I also haven't seen or heard any Pakistani comedians , I wonder if they tell English jokes

No problem with offensive language, Eddie Murphy "Raw" and Richard Pryor were notorious for that. The only thing is they were great stand up comics and very funny, something RCB will never, ever be

I don't think so, but he did appear in one episode as the Mayor of Royston Vasey (which is his real name).

Never seen or heard any of this Roy Chubby Brown's material but having skimped through this thread will be sure to seek out his discs in local Charity shop visits

Might be worth it if you don’t have a sense of humour:laugh:

Typical thread full of the usual trendy NSC Metropolitan Elite showing off. I bet they all love clever left wing comics like Stephen Mulhern and Michael Macintyre. It's about time the real alternative comics like Roy, Jim Davidson and Jimmy Tarbuck were given another crack at ITV prime time.

Michael MacIntyre annoys me like stink, and I have always aspired to join the NSC Metropolitan Elite! My life is in ruins:down:

PS - and I’d never heard of Stephen Mulhern before reading this. It gets worse.

Thing is from what I knew of (the now deceased) Bernard Manning he could actually deliver a joke and a lot of the material in the later years was about himself. Jim Davidson actually had a fair run presenting mainstream shows such as the Generation Game and Big Break so could obvious adapt to the audience (or certainly could).

I might be paying the man a disservice but RCB just seems a one trick pony.

Wasn't he in the 2001 boxing day special and the "Apocalypse" special when Royston Vasey (the town) was destructing because the writers were on strike .....?

funny to have the town at the centre of your comedy series named after a comedian who had no input whatsoever wouldn't you say....then again after his comment about the Bradford FC fire i'm surprised he hasn't been done.

i know what his real name is cheers , i'll check some of my box sets and see if he's credited with contributing.....:)

To be fair, my own view would be that both Manning and Davidson are/were funny men who could also sometimes (maybe usually) be crude, racist or whatever.

Roy Chubby Brown just isn’t funny from what I have seen of him, relying PURELY on obscenity or the like. He had a hit record a while ago with the “Who the f##k is Alice?” Thing. I never understood why the repetition of that sentence over a perfectly harmless record made it funny.

I think the closest match to Jim Davidson in the current entertainment world is probably someone like a Jimmy Carr. Carr's stand-up is outrageous (not offensive in the same way as Davidson's was but certainly an acquired taste) but also seems to be quite easy value for light entertainment shows.

In light of other issues elsewhere, I may have overreacted slightly on Monday morning so apologies to my 3 fellow NSC'ers and their respective Nom de plumes.

However my original sentiment has not wavered.

Regardless of whether you like the work of Roy Chubby Brown or not there is a serious question about censorship here?

What right do Sheffield City Council have to dictate what the local population can and can't watch?

Surely market forces will provide the answer?

If RCB doesn't sell enough tickets to break even you've got the answer, if however he almost fills the venue as he's done for over 30 years then that's the answer.

As it stands over 30,000 people have signed a petition against the decision.

How far will censorship go before we get to Orwellian levels?

Fun fact to finish with, Life of Brian was banned by Worthing Borough Council from the both the towns cinema's for blasphemy in 1979, 40 or years so later, Always Look On The Brightside of Life is one of the most popular tunes played at the Council owned Crematorium, so ultimately is it actually about the opinions of the people in power at a specific time, whether that's right or wrong?

Apology accepted

My points remain too:

1) In general comedy should not be banned. Life of Brian is a good example of why not.
2) However, within that, venues must be free to not book comedy they think will not work in their venue for whatever reason
3) Forcing venues to book people really isn't any more liberal and has very bad overtones.

I'd tell you that over a diet coke BTW. I don't think it's either bullying or very far from your position.

It is very, very, very simple. They are not telling people what they can and can't watch. They have every right to decide who is and isn't allowed to use their theatre. They are not stopping people from watching him, just from watching him at their venue.

And to make it even simpler, swap RCB for Abu Hamza and see if you think the same. I will also await your rant on the people demanding the BBC are defunded because they don't like who they do and don't have on.

I have no problem with censorship if it is someone that thinks using the word 'n***ers' or 'p**is' as part of their act.

They have every right to Censor rhetoric of the ilk that Roy Chubby Brown Spouts - if you don't censor it then you embolden people with those views who will carry out violence upon certain groups of people within society.

We watched such a thing happen throughout history and if we do not learn from it then we are destined to repeat it. Anti Semitic rhetoric led to millions of Jews being slaughtered during the 1930s and 1940s - Other minority groups suffer the same all around the world even now.

Roy Chubby Brown not only isn't funny - His views on certain groups within society are dangerous.

And as evidence about how dangerous such views can be - We only have to look at what played out on January 6th when Donal Trump emboldened Right Wing White Supremacist Groups. People died that day

It already has. This is the equivalent of the an away team asking the Albion to change their seat allocations and getting all their fans to sign a petition to support it. There may be legitimate reasons for the request, but I would expect the Albion to place a higher value on not pissing off their season ticket holders. Regional theatres are very reliant on regulars who turn up and watch almost everything, keeping these people happy outranks appeasing a bunch of 1980's throwbacks who happened to have signed a petition. - sorry.

I’ve wasted half the afternoon reading this entire thread, and I haven’t laughed once.
