100%. I can’t get people who are into football but aren’t into major tournaments. It’s peak football drama and romance.

What’s been dramatic or romantic about our first 3 games?

In my head I’ve been giving it the old “this is as insipid as the Italia 90 group stage and we managed to come good then” but in reality I’m so uninspired by cautious Gareth’s approach that I fear he will attempt a containment job on Tuesday and that we’ll also see the Germany that spanked Portugal turn up.

Agreed, this is more likely to be a who dares wins rather than he who shits himself might get away with it game

Since Southgate became manager we've beaten Spain, Croatia, Netherlands and Belgium, lost to Spain, Croatia, Netherlands and Belgium, and drawn with Italy. That's all the 'good teams' we've played. Meanwhile semi finals of world cup, semis of nations league, and no goals conceded in euros group stage.

In not a massive fan but I don't think changing again helps anyone, his record on paper is good for a young developing side. A defensive team with skill on the break can win these tournaments.

Next game will be very hard whoever we play, I'd rather go into this to enjoy the game as an England fan and hope for a win, without having the added baggage of 'Must win or Southgate sacked'. Its really not necessary, and to be honest I think anyone who is saying that has already decided they want Southgate gone.

My Villa-supporting mate, a proper diehard Villa fan, can't stand Southgate (I was surprised too). Just another Bruce he says. He wants Potter to be England manager, thinks he's the best English coach around. I can see where he's coming from with Southgate, but I'd like to hold on to Potter a while yet :)
I cant see GP being at all interested in the England job currently. He prides himself in developing players to make them better. That is not the role of the national manager that is the role of the club coach

I was wondering what had happened to this thread.

Actually that's a lie.

The first few pages contain some absolute ridiculous posts that look so silly now whatever happens. Absolute joke. Not enough olive branches or energy to quote them!

Eh? The original premise of this thread is sound, and for me still stands.

It was posted before the Germany game and essentially said that should England go out the tournament in the first knockout game playing dour football then Southgate should go. If we got eliminated but had at least given it a good go, then that, for me would be acceptable.

Regardless of what the FA say, had we been beaten and knocked out at Wembley by the Germans then the clamour for Southgate to go would have been deafening. I believed that Germany game was a defining 90 minutes in Southgate's England career and still do. Every football manager's job usually pivots on one moment; is that really so hard to understand?

Not at all. That's rubbish, what a stupid post. Southgate might be getting the absolute minimum that's expected out of this squad. But that does not mean he's the messiah. Some of his player selections are disgraceful. We've played no one decent (including a very poor German team) - he was only given the job because he's a yes man and the media won't find anything dirty on him. If we do not win the Euros from here he should be sacked and hopefully end up as a scout for Middlesbrough or something, although I don't quite think he's got the credentials for that either. He's a scumbag and his whiter then white act might wash with you naive lot, but it certainly doesn't wash with me.

Meanwhile, all of the above is, of course, complete nonsense and hyperbole.

He has to go immediately, today. He should of resigned after the Scotland game, he didn't so he should of been sacked. He should of resigned after last night's game, he didn't and so should be sacked.

He's an embarrassing "coach" , doesn't have any tactical knowledge of the game, player selection is the biggest joke as he selects players that are not in form. He's pathetic. He has about as much personality of a cauliflower.

He was only employed because the FA say jump and that tit says "how high?" Biggest national disgrace in years. What credentials did he have in being offered the job in the first place? He's done nothing, achieved nothing as a coach. And the sooner we get knocked out the better, so I don't have to see his face and hear his monotone voice every single day.

Ok, the above post has made me muster the energy to quote the most funny one from this thread  Enjoy…

I dont think he would have gone unless there was a real trashing. Yes people would have moaned but I think the FA would have kept him at least over Qatar next year

Somebody please take this persons spade away from them, so they can stop digging an even bigger hole!

Losing to Germany shouldn't be acceptable with this group of players. Sure, bad results happen and that's fine, but if we go out to the first decent team we play in the knockouts again then I can't see how anybody can argue there has been any real progress. It's great that the players seem to enjoy playing for England again and don't suffer with the fear anymore, but we need more than that now. Beat Germany and our route to the final is wide open.

Southgate's pragmatic approach is probably the right one to get us furthest in the tournament, as much as it pains me to say it. The Hughton comparisons are fair but there is a key difference- Hughton didn't have match winners like Kane / Sterling / Foden etc in the side. England have the quality to get a goal or two while keeping things tight. We need to beat Germany or we should make a change in management.

Nice to re-read this post with a smile. He did it. And now we have a genuine chance of winning the tournament. In fact, I actually think we're going to.

If we get past Denmark then I have a feeling Italy will do us. But you never know.

God, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

I think a game with Italy will very much depend on the refereeing. If they're allowed to get away with the shenanigans they employed against Belgium, we could be in trouble; if they're called to task over the time-wasting, hidden fouls, falling over etc. then I think we can outplay them.

Their antics only come into play if they're winning though. If we do end up playing them, then going a goal down would be a disaster. They'd just shithouse their way to victory. They were absolutely outrageous against the Belgians the other night.

I’ll be delighted if we just get to the final.

And from there, no matter who we play in a one off game, at home… who knows what can happen.
