I’d argue considering it’s a needless piece of government legislation considering the incredibly low percentage of voter fraud, the onus should be on the government to provide support to ensure everyone has access to a form of ID, especially to those who will be most effected by said legislation.

Agreed that the Government should provide this support

So your experience of other societies leads you to the conclusion that it is a conspiracy theory to suggest the government would bring in a voter policy that might harm the opposition more than it does them? Is that where enlightenment has got you?

No, what I do see though is the same people and politicians pushing this conspiracy theory as the ones who push Tory corruption conspiracies. Quite a co-incidence don’t you think ? My experience living abroad simply informs me that photo ID/ID cards etc are pretty standard in most places.

Do we really have to go through this again?

Almost as big a coincidence as someone supporting a government not seeing any wrong doing. Two sides of the same coin.

as this is a ruse to give a national ID, we can be sure that will feature prominently. once everyone has made a massive fuss, they can u-turn/show they are listening, providing a solution to the main objection.

Stable door - horse bolted. I'm not in favour of ID cards (having lived more years than I care to mention without one) but the realpolitik is that they've arrived by stealth. So many things you can't do in this country now without photo ID. Time now for the government to issue free ID cards to those who don't have a passport or a photo driving licence - especially to those older people who have given them up/not renewed them because they don't need them any more).
One easy step - to avoid the government having to do too much - would be to make bus passes legally valid as photo ID - and make it illegal for commercial enterprises to refuse to accept them ad ID.
Legislation is also needed to make it illegal for all and sundry to demand photo ID without good cause, and to make it illegal for them to insist on taking a photo of your ID (and claiming 'It's to stop money laundering, innit').

I see lots wrong with the current Government so that certainly doesn’t apply. I’m a big believer in responsibility, community and society and can’t abide libertarianism. I am in favour of more state intervention in the economy and think that everybody should play their part in society. I don’t like the softly softly approach the Government has taken over Covid rule enforcement nor their instincts to let the free market decide. It’s just that I’m not a conspiracy theorist.

Jesus wept

Yesterday, you attempted to reduce objective fact to a matter of opinion or perspective. Admittedly, you almost, almost, conceded there “may” be wrong doing over covid contracts, but you stopped short of calling it corruption. You couldn’t even muster cronyism.

Today, you’ve well and truly gone off the reservation and are calling it a conspiracy theory. In doing so, you have lost any and all credibility on the subject. You’re either in total denial or utterly deluded.

No, just thick. I bow to your superior opinions

I cannot recall having to show a photo ID for ten years - since the last time I used my passport. In fact, the only times I can ever remember having to provide photo ID is when going abroad, and when getting into the Gloucester in the late 80's / early 90s whilst pretending to be a student.

I seem to be able to live my life quite happily - so, I'm not sure it's true to say that there's so many thing I can't do?

Selling or scrapping a car is one of many. Cashing in an insurance policy is another. Closing a bank savings account (HSBC if you want details). So, IIRC, was joining AirB'n'B. Lots more organisations taking advantage due to Covid. It's everywhere - I guess you probably show your driving licence sometimes without even thinking about it.
If it really hasn't happened to you yet, expect a rude awakening any time soon!

Hmm - sold 2-3 few cars in the last 10 years. Never had to show anything, but then I think they have actually been registered in my wife's name. Haven't been a 'host' on Air B'n'B but booked stays - not shown anything there. My driving licence lives in a box in the loft where I put it after getting it, not sure it's seen the light of day since - it's not something I have ever carried around with me.

I'm interested now, and will be fascinating to see when it happens (probably an election away yet!). I'll let you know!

I have needed mine for work, for identification for solicitors when buying houses, applying for mortgages, for organizing a power of attorney and signing a rental contract. Those are just off the top of my head.

Not sure why you would have needed a photo ID to sell a car, all that paperwork can be done on the gov.uk website

The dealer will not buy a car unless you provide photo ID (selling privately would be different). The paperwork when selling a car for scrap includes the scrap dealer adding a photo of your photo ID to the paperwork. No, I can't see the necessity - prevention of money laundering is usually quoted. Ridiculous, but that is the reality in present day Britain.

It's not about becoming a host. You have to register with AirB&B before you can make your first booking - and they now require photo ID to do that (scanned and sent by email). That may be a more recent thing - once you've stayed once then obviously they track all the bookings you make, so you don't have to provide ID every time you book.

I'm guessing you sold the cars privately.

So seems this is going ahead, but according to Johnson in the press conference it only applies to “first time voters”. A demographic which, in I’m sure an entirely unrelated development, is far less likely to vote Conservative.

A novel idea, preventing people likely to oppose you from voting. Surprised nobody’s thought of it before.
How do they define 'first time voters'? How do they know if you've voted before? The ballot papers don't contain your details. You might have not bothered to vote for years, even though you were eligible to vote, then suddenly started feeling a sense of civic duty in your 40s or 50s.

For me the greater concern is intelligence, and not ID. I’d only allow people who have a basic grasp of politics, demonstrated by passing a test, to be able to vote. I am sure everyone will support my initiative to raise the bar in politics and democracy.
