The liberal left, Guardian reading, woke set should be comedy gold for any self-respecting non-pc comedian as they are so far up their own backsides even colonic irrigation couldn't extract them.

You'd think there'd be something sending them up really. Can you think of any TV characters that have met this brief?

Hopefully, something better will replace this very average and predictable show.

It seems the funny right-wing comedian is as elusive as the tangible benefits from Brexit...

As a matter of interest, do you like Stewart Lee?

I'm aware of the name but I had to ask Mrs T who he is. She says he's great and she's seen him live, twice. I have seen tiny snippets but haven't been moved to check him out. If his comedy is overtly political I'm unlikely to be engaged; that came and went for me with Richard Pryor, the shouty man on Saturday Night Live ranting about Mrs Thatch, and Attila the stockbroker. That said I am a big fan of Frankie Boyle.

I occasionally watch that stand up programme, whatever it's called, but I prefer situation comedy. One of my worst experieces was when a former girlfriend dragged me along to see Ricky Gervaise. An hour or more of one person droning on, much of it demonstrating cleverness, much of it lazy, was a long way from enjoyable.

It always depresses me how people can find it so easy to lump whole groups of people together so easily, whether it is about the Liberal left, Brexiteers, Muslims, Crystal Palace supporters or whatever..........

The only character that has had any real satirical bite in my view is Titania McGrath but 'she' would never get commissioned by any mainstream channel.

In the interests of diversity and inclusivity, it would be nice if more truly 'alternative' comedians could be found, encouraged and given a chance. After all, the lefty liberal comedians have been the comedy establishment for decades.

what holds them back tho', as there's clearly a large, receptive audience?

It’s better to try to get actual laughs rather than approval from people who agree with you politically.

Jokes about woke Guardian readers would be about as unfunny as jokes about Nigel Farage. Morecambe and Wise were both Conservative voters but you wouldn’t know that watching their shows. They were also happy to work alongside Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson. They’d make mild jokes about Heath and Wilson and that was it. The rest was just fun.

Instead of left- or right-wing comedy, maybe just... comedy?

On Alexei Sayle's recent podcast, tabloid favourite Stewart Lee said that there isn't a conspiracy against right wing comedians, its just that to actually be right wing you generally need to lack imagination, empathy and a sense of humour. A cheap one liner perhaps, but still genuinely funnier than the whole of Geoff Northcott's career output.

Good point, I'm not claiming this is definitely the main reason but if most comedy show commissioning editors (especially at the Beeb) are more likely to be left-leaning Guardian readers and very sympathetic to the woke agenda and terrified of the cancel culture social media mobs then perhaps anyone who is not on message doesn't get a foot in the door.

This.

With Gammon Broadcasting about to launch you'd think they'd have their own version of The Late Show fired up and ready to go. All the Alt Right shills I've read are unerringly witty, hilarious and up to date.

:moo:

Also, this show hasn’t been cancelled as in banned. The old episodes will be around on the iPlayer. And if Channel 4, say, wanted to bring it back, they’re free to do so.

Like 99% of the stuff you're always banging on about "cancel culture" on here hasn't been banned. Now you accept there's a difference will you stop whining about it constantly

It's no great loss really.

I usually found the Rachel Parris bits funny and sometimes chuckled at the news headline sections. Nish Kumar isn't anywhere near as funny as he thinks he is though. Some of his monologues were quite painful viewing.

Whining about it constantly? 99%

Commissioning editors who say “I’m not working with that fascist.”

so were there lots of right leaning comics on the circuit pre covid?

obvs. tv is rapacious for new talent, esp. something "new" and already widely popular

I don’t think they’re that welcome on the circuit either.
