Mad how out of the blue this feels.

Obviously there was discontent between him and the board but The Athletic noted that it was likely Wilder was part of the Championship planning 5 hours ago.

In planning ahead, they should prioritise the restoration of relations between the ownership and Wilder given that he surely represents their best chance of mustering a quick return to the top division. They can only start planning for next term in the second tier, so building bridges with the manager – the most successful at Bramall Lane in the last quarter of a century – and evaluating which players upon whom they will lean seem the best use of their time from now on in. They need a clear strategy aimed at recovery.

As much as I want them to drop to help our cause, I really like the bloke.

Always honest, he managed his club, he got them promoted on a low-ish budget and it p'd off envious Massive.

I hope he has success elsewhere, but not at Smellhurst.

Not so much a myth, but the boost doesn't tend to last more than one or two games

Despite their problems this season, we couldn't beat them at home despite playing with a man extra for almost an hour.

Burnley kept Dyche and bounced straight back. Norwich look like they'll do the same with Farke. Wilder could have done that.

This season's a bit of a write-off anyway in plenty of respects for many supporters and it's far too late for them to stay up now.

If they were going to replace him, there was ample opportunity and reason before Christmas and the January window to do so.

With the new Championship season due to start in less than 5 months time, it's an unnecessary and redundant decision at best.

Wilder will end up at Newcastle or Palace

He’s been quite clever here if it’s mutual, I can’t see Sheff United coming back up next season and he is leaving whilst his stock is high.

Newcastle should be all over this. The bloke is available and his former team are going down. Nightmare scenario - the Toon sack Bruce, appoint Wilder, he gives them a bounce and we go down with the Blades and the Baggies.

And if that doesn't happen he takes over at Palace in the summer and they get a decent manager.

Either way, this is not good news.

I can't see him being out of a job for long.

The media have all been pretty consistent in pinning United's resurgence on his management.
Very few (if any) have blamed him for their run of form this season.

His stock is pretty high at the moment. May not get a move to a prem club, but Championship teams will be all over him.

No way will Wilder end up at Newcastle. Mike Ashley already has his "happy-to-be-here" manager installed, a guy he knows won't make any waves about lack of funding/backing. Wilder would go there and expect to be backed, which is a headache Ashley would prefer to avoid.

Roy will be wheeled out the door in his bathchair with a blanket over his knees, and Palace will unfortunately get themselves a very decent manager for next season.

I hope he doesn't go there as I like the bloke but Palace should be all over this. I would take him over Howe and Dyche any day.

Aside from our game at BL, their finish to the season will have no bearing on us at all. If we can't finish above them when we're 12 points clear of them with 10 to go (11 for us), then we'll have been comfortably overhauled by everyone below and around us, not just them.

Hmmm - seems he is set to leave today if you believe the BBC.

If so that would be Sheff U & West Brom that have gambled on manager changes maybe saving them (or are the just preparing for life in the Championship?). That leaves us , Fulham & Newcastle hoping that the existing manager is able to save the day. One of the three is going to be left regretting that decision.
