Just another benefit of leaving the EU.

Sorry to be lazy, but it would be appreciated, if anyone is willing to quickly explain to me why, when we were in the EU, PT was allowed to play for Belgian clubs (in the EU) and not us, and also, why now we have left the EU, that PT can play in UK?

Our post Brexit rules are not based on the same criteria as before, which has included fifa rankings.

It’s now based on international appearcnes, quality of selling club and league strength.

Each country in the EU/EEA has its own work permit rules for third country nationals; it's only the intra-community rules which are harmonised.

But I'll Eden a guess the turn around in this case has been so quick because the club has had every I dotted and T crossed for weeks even months.

They've probably had a whole host of back and forth's with the required Whitehall departments, so were ready for the green light moments after the doors opened.

Whatever one thinks, less than 3m for Percy Tau is incredible business. The club may have made that back already with loan fees.

How many times? ITS A BUSINESS TRANSACTION.

Always never likely to play for us. ‘Shine’ in Belgium, maybe get them promoted or into Europa League and then perhaps another slightly bigger European club homes sniffing and who knows maybe we double our money on him. That’s the model.

How could we have loaned him to a higher profile league if there were no offers? I’m fairly sure this was always the intended path.

It’s a clear TB business decision to me but I understand how others might view it differently.




I think TB was 100% clear with PT, his agent etc. In this scenario I expect being given the chance of
maybe tripling his salary, playing in Europe to a higher standard than he previously was and affording him that type of exposure was always the intended plan.

Whether we sell him in the summer off the back of his strong USG performances remains to be seen but I highly doubt we said “sign for BHAFC and we’ll find a way to fudge the work permit application to make sure you’re playing in the Premier League next year”.

He knew he was joining to be loaned out and I expect he knew the chances were high we’d cash in our chips at some point to a club in a European league where he can play without the work permit issues.

Business. Player plays well elsewhere, other clubs in Europe alerted to abilities, sold on for a profit in the Summer. Next.

No mistake. Part of the plan. It’s a business pure and simple. Do you really think based on his Belgian div 2 exploits he’d pull up trees in the Prem? No. So why sign him? Possible profit.

Like it or lump it we’re in the Chelsea loanee game now.

Yup, this. Some countries, like Belgium and Sweden got basically no rules. If you are 18+ and sometimes not even that, you are allowed to sign wherever you're from. In Spain and some other countries you can have a maximum of three non-EU players. In Holland all non-EU players must get at least the average wage of the the league. UK pretty much always had the toughest rules on this... which is generally pretty good as there is a lot of shady people involved in getting young Africans to European clubs.

Did we change our work permit rules at midnight on 31st Dec? ie Before our work permit rules said he couldn't, and on 1st Jan we changed our own work permit rules (at the same time as Brexit), and now he can?

Yes, exactly that, because while the UK was part of the EU there was free movement of labour, and that has now changed.
