Take care, my friend. I hope you're feeling a bit perkier. I had wondered whether there may have been a low-energy basis for your apparent and uncharacteristic pessimism.

I am physically well at last and running again (but carrying an extra 2 stone) so all is good on the b'stard virus front.

I have, however, like many others, been banged up with the same three other people all year and, while I love them dearly, my once or twice a week yelling at the telly with a glass of something in my hand should release me from the inevitable tension. Instead it has made me even more sweary over the last couple of weeks. :tantrum:

The question on this thread was well intentioned though. I found it interesting and difficult to answer and wanted to know what other Brighton fans would have said. Hence the POLL.

You can take it a number of ways but, in this context, staying in the PL playing defensively is a nod to keeping Hughton or Potter being more pragmatic or a Big Sam type rescuer coming in. The subtext is (for me) "how desperate are you to stay up?". Or "our lovely football might take us down".

A Merry Christmas to you and yours anyway and hope you are also surviving the shittiest of shitstorms in the least annoying way possible. :drink:  :xmas:

We're going through this very transition now although we're a million years off playing like Brazil. We've won more games already than we did last season in the PL and are the leagues top scorers.

It feels bloody good, however there's an unhealthy level of expectation bubbling beneath the surface that brings a different type of stress. There's also mixed opinions about returning (if we do that is, this league is crazy). Obviously we'd welcome the PL money as we have an unfinished training academy on hold but the losses in the PL really do begin to grind you down. Also the hope that a mid table PL finish is probably the best we can achieve kind of pisses on any pre season fireworks. We had a 9th place, we're under no illusions it will never get better than that.

The odd win against the big six was brilliant, great memories over five years, including that big win at yours (apologies ) and winning at St Marys. The covid thing kind of nullified the upset of relegation because we weren't there I guess and to be truthful its tempered any strong feelings about our league position at the moment. Its football but not as we know it.

So yeah, winning is great, scoring goals for fun are great, not shipping goals is great. Miss being on MOTD, don't miss VAR but the refs here are pretty poor, miss seeing some quality football, don't miss the annual trouncing at the Etihad.

How far are we away from being a Palace or a bloody Newcastle where they seem to be safe by February? We have outplayed both this season so can't be far....but it just doesn't seem to happen.

The question asks "defensively" - I don't think we are in the PL but we are in a battle.. I have no problem with that and am happy that we are at least trying to put something into place to try and make us successful at this level. The absolute toil, heartache, money, effort etc etc etc by so many at the Club to give us this experience. I wouldn't throw it away at all.. I can handle not seeing us win every week - or even most weeks - most of my Albion history has been like that..

When we are actually at the games, I am still stunned watching us play football of this quality up close (and even begrudgingly and disappointedly, when they do at times). Our football has improved season upon season, even if our results haven't at times.

I'm still on the upward curve and dying to get back, even though I loved the season where we beasted the championship and loved Kayal and Stephens bossing the midfield (and I'll even forgive them for all getting pissed and blowing it). We have since moved upwards and I'll stick with still trying to move upwards. We always knew it wouldn't be easy, but when you dream the dream and get there, you have to up your dreams a little

That's good news (the first bit - your recovery). Very good news. :rave:

Thinking about your subtext....and I will add caveats (I would, wouldn't I?), I want the lovely football to continue, and the club to imprint a DNA via the owner and manager in the way that Klopp has transformed the DNA of Liverpool and, until Levien and Kaplan took over the club, how Jenkins changed the DNA of Swansea. Yes, the lovely football may take us down....

In my line of work, I could have cut corners, been a 'flash Harry' (sic) and would be looking at retiring now as a professor with a legacy of dozens of grumpy former students and a reputation as a higher achiever, but who had in fact discovered nothing of value, published nothing that was credible, and succeeded in doing nothing more than warming the air in the local region. I would rather be relatively unknown but highly regarded by a small number of people I respect*. I have still paid the bills and my finest academic achievement looks like being my last rather than my first. Whatever, I will look back at my career with full satisfaction. I'd like to think that Tony Bloom will do the same at his tenure as BHA owner, perhaps with G-Pott instrumental in that satisfaction.

We are all good here, with (yes more) caveats (Christmas....relatives....etc.). Amazon has been my friend. The house is big enough for we three. And the Kent countryside and coasts have many empty spaces. I have put on a stone, but I was already a stone overweight, so it's . . . disappointing, as G-Pott would say. Among the many surprising events of the year is I have discovered that I'm not quite the ticket in the old mind tank ('on the spectrum' apparently) which, paradoxically, has helped me keep sane because, frankly, I find interacting with people, in a 'room full of human flesh and hot breath' situation, not to my taste, so the relative solitude has been soothing. On the other hand, well, you've probably seen that some of my NSC posts have been a bit, angry and emotional :facepalm:
.
I look forward to beers on the W Upper concourse towards the end of this season, after we old fuggers (I mean me not you) have been vaccinated. I'm sure Boris can't cock that up, can he?

Take care and have a lovely Christmas with your family. HTW

I thought you’d mellowed a bit on NSC as this anus horribilis trundled on, not looking for a row with every Trump or Anti-Vaxer. Picking your moments.

That's true. But I've just shifted my emoting to other things (and people who I don't now have on ignore) :lolol:

The idea we'd destroy the Championship playing like 1970s Brazil is Massive levels of delusion and arrogance. If we go down this year it will be with Sheffield United (backed by untold Saudi riches), already we're unlikely to be in the top two favourites for promotion from a neutral point of view. If we blow it and get relegated it could be a long long road back.

Fair points. And that's what scares me a little. I went through Goldstone (albeit the last year there), Gillingham and Withdean. To take the drop
won't be a disaster of course, but psychologically it will be a real sort of "oh, here we go again" moment. Can I withstand that. I hope so, but I'm not sure.

I am still of the opinion that I would prefer we stay in the PL even if we are playing shit football.

I know you expressed a binary position but I think the reality is the club has the right approach and is showing small step improvements so our 'shit football' this season is actually better than the 'shit football' in the years previous. More importantly if we stay up we will get lucky against top 6 teams and that is what it is all about for me.

The most curious thing..
Brazil 1970 in the Premiership.

Having got to the promised land, why would you want to leave?

I enjoyed the Championship much more so I voted for that (although if they bring VAR in, I'd change my mind).

I don't understand why people think we'd struggle in the Championship though. I agree that we shouldn't take promotion for a given but we'd be a top 6 side.

How many players would we lose from the current set-up? White, Biss and Lamptey nailed on to go. I get the impression that Propper and Ali J want to go back to Netherlands and Ryan wants regular football, but who else is going to leave? Losing three of our regular starters is scarcely gutting the team. And we've got Andone, Polish Jake and the Golden Boy (and possibly Tau and Izzy)to come in.

The big advantage that I see is that it will give some players a chance to play at a high level without the pressure of the PL. Argie Al is clearly a talented player but needs to get used to English football, Connolly needs a season at a lower level and we could bring the likes of Sanders, Roberts, Cochrane, Khadra and Yapi through more quickly.

No, we'd definitely be a contender in the Championship - it would be fun,

Good question on Albion Roar this week. Would you prefer to be watching us playing backs to the wall stuff in the Premier League or "Brazil 1970" in The Championship?

Poll to follow. There is no fence.

Can't say I ever remember us playing like this, I think Brazil actually score a here.
