I think it's spreading because it is a highly contagious virus that we have no immunity to. Whether a big portion of this is because of a few prats in supermarkets not wearing a mask properly is probably down to your outlook, because I doubt there is any evidence for this being a route cause. You can be wearing your mask perfectly but touch your forehead while looking at a tin of beans then putting the tin back, well there is potentially the virus ready for the next shopper mask or not...

It's a lot more than a few prats. And what about the non mask wearing idiots who don't social distance and gather in large numbers to protest against lockdown measures? Not the only cause, I'm sure, and to suggest that I think it is the sole cause is pretty ridiculous - but non mask wearers with symptom-less Covid are thoughtless irresponsible super-spreaders.

It's spreading because it is a virus. It wouldn't just disappear if everyone strictly followed the rules. There will be transmission from completely rule abiding vigilant people to other vigilant people. The spreading isn't simply down to people not keeping to rules. That does appear to be what you're suggesting.

I see Johnson had a special exemption inserted into the new rules so that someone (I wonder who?) with a child under one year old can form a support bubble with as many other households as they like regardless of numbers involved.....and it applies at any time (not just Christmas Day).
It was well hidden in the regulations but once it becomes public knowledge (thanks to the Financial Times) up to 750,000 households might also benefit rather than just one.

Just spreading the news......

The website says one other household.

Unfortunately our daughter is 14 days too old to be covered by this - and we're really struggling from lack of support.

Oh for goodness sake. He is getting asked the same question by the same journalists and they know he is not going to disclose the progress of negotiations in reply to their question. I would imagine that Tony has a little chuckle as well every time he is asked about negotiations with potential new strikers. Internet propaganda really is in overdrive on this thread.

A little chuckle? Who needs internet propaganda when you can see and hear for yourself? Yes, I’m biased because I can’t stand the man, but that wasn’t a little chuckle.

You need to read more carefully. I never said it was the only cause - you seem to be saying that wearing masks has no effect. Anyway, the fact remains that people who refuse to wear masks, or wear them draped round their necks, are thoughtless, selfish prats.

Fixed for you.
Drakeford actually announced that he was scrapping the 5 day Christmas loosening of restrictions while Johnson was answering PMQ'S on Wednesday. At that time, Johnson stated that " all the four governments of the United Kingdom had agreed unanimously "to the measures and accused Starmer of " Wanting to cancel Christmas".

I am not convinced that masks are beneficial because people instantly seem to have stopped socially distancing as a result of wearing them. Can't disagree with your second sentence though!

Without the force of the law, and sanctions that'll hurt and are actually applied, it is inevitable that prats will be prats, sadly.

Never a truer word said. Like traffic lights, it's not particularly cyclists, or vans, or cars that jump red lights - it's prats! :annoyed:

My favourite description of Boris, and one I've never felt to move away from, is thus:-

'He sees which way everybody is running, then gets in front and yells 'come on everybody, follow me' '

Mine is Max Hastings:- "I would trust him with neither my wallet nor my wife"

Thanks for the reply and sympathy Sid, My son who lives in Sydney tells me that they have reintroduced measures due to an upsurge in cases !

Our Government were informed of this more virulent strain back on September 20th and still we are caught unawares???? you couldn't make it up.

I went to a local shopping centre here in Eastbourne last week, its a covered mall, within two minutes whilst making my way to the supermarket in there i counted five different people without face masks! so immediately turned around and left, these people were all mid twenties to fifties age range so what chance do we have in trying to quell the rise in infections? if people ignore the rules and selfishly carry on with their relentless spreading all the sacrifices made by the majority are pointless.

Those refusing to wear masks will, if challenged, just bark back "I'm exempt". It really is that easy.

Do away with this nonsense shopping list of excuses err I mean exemptions and make everybody wear a face covering. No more bloody exemptions. Those selfish ------ who are happy to pass on the virus to those of us who are following the rules should be locked indoors if they refuse to wear something to protect the rest of us.

Then - once you have made the face coverings compulsory for everybody - it is much easier to police and enforce. The way Boris has allowed so many "exemptions" is bloody ridiculous.

1) Remove ALL exemptions from face coverings

2) You are refused admittance to shops, public transport etc unless you wear a face covering

3) The OB can start dishing out the fines to those who still try to use shops / public transport without a face covering

How simple is that?

too simple. should have issued those with exemptions some form o medical certificate then enforced non-wearing. i believe masks are at the root of problems with rule breaking, because the lack of serious enforcement signals to people its optional and so is everything else.

People have always broken rules, they drink drive, speed, take drugs, trespass, litter – I'm not sure masks have introduced a rule breaking mindset to the British public, it's very much entrenched. No different to leaving Brighton Beach like a landfill site at the end of a sunny day. A great many Brits don't like being told what to do – let's not bring the B word into it, but the not being told what to do is very much at the heart of it.
