9/10 for Grealish’s theatrical performance but I think Trezeguet’s ‘I’ve been shot by a sniper’ takes some beating. A performance truly worthy of the West End :tosser:

Agree re Shearer though the pundits rarely watch a full game, so would have missed the opportunities where Maupay didn’t attack the space.

What else do you believe Shearer was watching at 3pm yesterday?

The 3 of them would have watched all 4 games, in studio, making copious note for the VT they want to discuss.

Indeed they sit in studio watching games for the whole day before the show.

Doesn’t work like that, I’m told they dip in and out throughout games

To what?

That would have been the case when there were 5 or 6 3pm kick offs.
But we were the only show in town.

Shearer isn't paid how ever many hundreds of thousands of pounds a year to 'dip in and out' of the only game being played.
A game he has to do live analysis on 5 hours later.

Ryan 7 - good performance. Some give him a poor rating because he makes them nervous... well, I think its more on the observer than the player.

White 8 - great performance both as defender and midfielder. Great defensively and some very nice passing.
Dunk 7 - some trouble but nothing serious enough to take away his fine performance
Webster 6 - playing LCB as a right footed defender is really awkward (hence why i.e. City paid £40m for Ake) and results in some dangerous passes, I cant go too hard on him, but there was a quite a few poor ones from him yesterday. Otherwise nothing to complain about.

Lamptey 9 - world class right back, one day he will be the most expensive right back of all time, until then I'm enjoying every game I get to see him in.
BIssouma 8 - not a lot of playmaking from him yesterday but did a lot of dirty work.
Lallana 7 - great with the ball but struggled a bit defensively
Gross 8 - nice assist and generally a very creative and efficient player
March 8 - great goal and overall great performance

Welbeck 8 - clever runs, decent hold up play and great goal
Maupay 6 - worked hard and created a lot of space for his team members, played a crucial part in Sollys goal. A few wasted opportunities where he should or at least could have moved into better positions

Veltman 7 - close to 8, a fine defender. Potter really got some luxuary problems in that position.

Dunk was a 6 at most. Ring rusty today. A 7 for Tariq? ??? Him and Welbeck were our 2 best players yesterday!

Edit: I was supposed to quote the OP's selection!!

Apologies to OTM.

Glad to see you’ve come round to my left sided centre back point of view with Webster Swanny and quoted me almost word for word with the Ake example!

I will also point out he played an excellent ball out of defence yesterday to Welbeck who flicked the ball on to Maupay for that chance he missed where he should have gone round the keeper.

I think Webster does a really good and important job for us in that position.

Yeah, it gets pretty much overlooked how important it is and Ake is a good example. Another good example: in the Swansea vs Manchester City game two years ago, 15 minutes into the game Potter moved Grimes from midield to left back because it was impossible to play through their pressure with four right footed defenders. It forces strange passing angles and passes with the outside of the foot which is rarely what central defenders excel at.

Absolutely. Also one of the reasons why Mings keeps getting in the England squad when ability and performance wise, he shouldn’t be anywhere near it.

So Webster has gone from being great (post lockdown) to now being a liability ?

Was no worse than Dunk today (who had a shocking first half) ..... plus Webster has again been moved position which can’t be helpful. The whole back 5 need a settled run as a unit, be surprised if we’ve played the same personnel and system more than two games in a row this season.

Maupay isn’t having a great run in front of goal at the moment but is working hard and involved in pretty much everything that we do that’s good. Making a few wrong decisions in the quest for a goal at the moment but no different to any other striker who is short of a few goals. What is more important is his partnership with Welbeck and how that is developing.

Good performance all round I thought... defensively nervous and panicked at times but some very good performances from March, Welbeck, Tariq and Groß.

It should be obvious by now that Webster is the current boo-boy, and Dunk has got no end of credit in the bank (deservedly so). These seem to be factored into many posters assessments of their match performances. I agree with your assessment on everything here, but I've had Bissouma rather than Gross as my stars of the day.

People do over look the stronger parts of Webster’s game sometimes. He’s had a few shaky games this season but he is very good at turning the ball out of defence and taking it forward. Very important to the way we play and why Duffy is no longer here.

That said, Ben White is getting better every game.

Ryan 7 -- Thought he did well without a great deal to do. Good improvisation to keep one chance out also.
White 8 -- Couple of fantastic last ditch challenges and linked with Lamptey very well.
Dunk 7 -- Did well after a slow start.
Webster 6.5 -- A coupe of errors but grew into things and kept his discipline
Lamptey 9 -- Fantastic performance again. Forced Villa to change formation. Incredibly harsh sending off.
Bissouma 8.5 -- He's really starting to look a complete defensive midfielder.
Gross 7.5 -- Put in a shift and laid on a goal. What's not to like?
Lallana 7.5 -- Super pass for Welbeck but his fitness issues are a concern.
March 7.5 -- He's a very good wing back, not in Lamptey's league but then not many are
Maupay 6 -- Worked hard but looks a little low on confidence currently. Some poor choices in the box but effort was there.
Welbeck 8.5 -- Missed a couple of decent opportunities but took his goal well, lead the line well and will get better as he gets fitter.

Subs:
Veltman 8 -- This is a very good player and an absolute bargain for £900k

Couldn't agree more. In my view, Webster probably had his worst game of the season yesterday, but still warranted a six. It's only Webster's shortcomings that tend to get highlighted on here -- and yesterday it was his passing, which was really poor by his standards -- while his strengths are overlooked. Yesterday, this was his carrying of the ball out of defence -- which has been a real feature of this season (I think he's got the best stats in the PL on this) -- but he also defended very well...

... but not as good as White as you said, he was my MotM -- there were some impeccably timed challenges in there. Both are extremely quick too.

Absolutely. Also one of the reasons why Mings keeps getting in the England squad when ability and performance wise, he shouldn’t be anywhere near it.

We knew this already, but yesterday illustrated it perfectly. Defensively all over the place.

Southgate can only be wooed by Mings having a bit of pace and he has a confident air (built on sand).

Yet he’ll remain an England player for years, it will cost us.
