[Music] Online Bass Guitar Lessons for an absolute beginner

Long story short, last Saturday night when drunk, my Mrs and I bought a Bass Guitar for me and an Acoustic Guitar for her (lockdown project, do something different to challenge yourself blah blah, I'm 52 FFS!)

Anyway I can't do any person to person lessons due to Covid and the Interweb appears to be a minefield trying to find the best batch of lessons (I'm willing to cough for it!)

Anybody got any advice for an inept beginner as to the best way to approach this?

If you want to learn some of your favourite songs, then bass tabs could be the way to go

You can progress quite quickly

You can learn the basics of any instrument on YouTube but if you want to get serious do find a good teacher. A YouTube video can't give you personal pointers and show you where you're going wrong.

I'm a fairly capable drummer but I still have lessons (outside of lockdown) to improve my techniques etc.

What should you aspire too? How about this combination? The tone of JJ Burnel, the slap of Mark King, the gallop of Steve Harris? Just to be going on with :)

I know of a bass player who taught his daughter.

First night he taught her to play E
Second night he taught her to play A
Third night she didn't turn up for her lesson, so he rang to see why

'Sorry Dad, I've got a gig'

You didn't say whether your Missus knows how to play that acoustic guitar or not. If she can, she can go a long way to getting you started - the strings on the bass are the same notes as the bottom four strings on her guitar, just an octave lower, so she should be able to point out which notes go with each chord she plays, and go from there.

Plus, as others have said, head for YouTube. Good luck - have fun!

Mrs B is an absolute beginner like me!

We've mucked about on Youtube but have found you do the absolute beginner lesson and then you seen to run before you can walk - obviously there are structured websites it looks like the free stuff is lesson one, then ten, then 20 but you have to pay for the ones in between, which isn't a problem, just want to "invest" in a recommended one if poss.

To give you an idea for the last couple of days I still haven't mastered the first 3 (relatively easy) notes from Another One Bites The Dust - that's my current level lol.

Mrs B's Mum died last year and we found a violin in her loft - the seed to learn a musical instrument was sown from there. Alas the Violin was crap!

Fast Forward, since Covid our Saturday nights revolve around bottles of wine and Youtube listening to music (big telly and 5.1 AV setup) and we've been muttering about stuff like me playing bass like Mark King (more chance of playing football like Messi atm!) so last Saturday my Mrs was really pi55ed and was pricing up Guitars and at Midnight, it appears we inadvertantly became proud owners of Bass and Acoustic Guitars!

You tube is useful, but many people are in it for e reason, or crap.

I had a few informal lessons from people, and got taught a few riffs to get me going . . . . when I was 14, the rest is self taught, the best thig I did and I'd recommend is learning to play some of your favourite music. I think Otis redding was one of the first albums I played along to. and some Jam stuff. don't aim too high to start, build your confidence.

Also, get online and learn the basics of setting the bass up, tunig, where the notes are and possibly ( depending what you've bought) string choice . . .its easy to get a horrible to play bass, not so simple to set it up and make it easy to play.

Would be happy to give you a zoom lesson one evening . . . .

LOL LOL -. Glad I don't drink at home. I would probably be woken next Tuesday by a delivery of a Grand Piano
