Remember we only paid 900 000 for Veltman, a Dutch international.

Not really Covid related though, Ajax got obscene money on the bank that they have no idea how to spend.

From what I understand it was a deal between Ajax director of football Overmars and Veltman when De Ligt left, basically "stay for another year and I'll give yoy this clause to let you go to the PL next summer".

Brighton factually.....
Would be a shame to see him move on, but no surprise as we seem to be upgrading on what we previously had. His range of passing and how he reads the game is sublime and he’s been a model professional even when Burnley first came knocking. One thought is, if Burnley think he can do a job, then obviously he can, now is it us surprising Burnley or us not realising what we all already have is an asset, for the poultry money being talked about, and the service he has and can provide for another season as a squad player, I’d keep him and let him leave in the summer and let him benefit from any signing on fee, that would be a nice thank you for years of great service.

If it's 500k we'd get that in Jan too imho

Keeping him here until January would mean we've wasted that £500k income, on his wages, for him to sit about doing nothing until then.

If he wants the move, let the fella go, with our thanks and best wishes.

during a pandemic heavily affecting the transfer market.

People say this but I'm not seeing any signs of it: Chelsea have just splashed out about £200m in a couple of weeks. Villa spunked £30m on Watkins, a decent championship striker. Leeds have spaffed £30m on Rodrigo, a 30-year old striker who scores once every six games, Newcastle spent £15m on Lewis, a full back who was part of one of the worst defences in the PL last year and so on.

There's no sign of any real effect as far as I can see

For Stephens, if he is playing regularly in the premier league this season he'll most likely be able to get a better contract and bigger signing-on fee next summer than if he's stuck on our bench all year

Clubs are still spending millions is covid really effecting the market ???

A growing tendency in PL the last couple of years is to buy players with borrowed money and it wouldnt surprise me one bit if that is what a couple of clubs are doing, though it will take a while before we know for sure. Other clubs are able to spend infinite money because their owners have infinite money.

Brighton & Burnley are two of the few British PL clubs and live in the British reality where their owners 1) have a genuine interest in their clubs and wont say "**** it, I'm out" if things go bad and 2) they cant go to their government and say "hey we ran out of money, print some more" unlike Chinese and Arab investors. Its a different reality.

You cant compare Brighton & Burnley to teams owned - through proxy - by foreign states.

I don't disagree with any of that ... but that's the complete opposite of saying that the transfer market has been affected by Covid

I know it's a dance as old as time.
I know I always fall for it.
I know I should just ignore it and with a mental :wanker: in the posters general direction.
I know I shouldn't write...

...Why the rush to do Stephens down?

I'm not his biggest fan and sure I've been critical of him in the past.
Yet to me that seems so far removed from:-

'Oh goodie Stephen's is off, I better stick the boot in one last time'.

I hope DS enjoys the Autumn of his career and like so many others I'll happily give him a cheer, back at the AMEX, if the opportunity arises.

Yes you are sort of right if we only look at 15 or so of the PL clubs. The two involved teams in this transfer are affected though. And nearly every other club in Europe as well. A normal year you could probably find someone in the Championship who would pay up £3m or something for a player like Stephens. This year it is quite likely £500k-1m, take it or leave it - there wont be any other buyers.

I love Stephens, great player for us over the years, but concede he may not wish to spend the season on our bench.
He's been great for us so wish him well if he finds he can play regularly elsewhere, he may not have more than a couple of seasons left at this level and clearly wants to be playing. Excellent model professional.

A lot of my favourites being shipped out this summer, but I understand and I'm very much enjoying our change all the same.

Two schools of thought I guess. 1 Curb spending to match income levels or 2. Spend extra in the belief that you will get more 'value' this season than in the future when prices rise.

Second one is much more risky but could also offer greater rewards if it goes right? Get relegated though or Covid go on for longer and you risk everything.

I almost guarantee he will score a long shot from midfield against us.
